How2become A Midwife
There has never been a more exciting time to become a midwife. Midwifery is one of the most rewarding and diverse careers in healthcare, in which you will meet new people, literally, every day of the working week!
The role of the midwife goes far beyond simply delivering babies. As a midwife you will be the primary contact for an expectant mother and her family throughout her pregnancy, labour and during the postnatal period. You will carry out clinical examinations and provide accurate and unbiased information, advice, support and education to enable pregnant women to explore the options available to them and make informed choices about their individual birth plans.
Midwives provide integrated care and therefore work in a variety of healthcare settings, from the maternity wards of hospitals to stand-alone birth units, at birth centres and within the community in collaboration with general practitioners (GPs).
As a midwife, you will be present at the birth of every baby under your care, whether this be in the home or at a hospital. Some midwives may also work in partnership with other healthcare service providers in the care of expectant mothers who fall into specific groups such as teenage mothers, mothers with a disability or mothers from ethnic minority groups.
