Car valets clean the inside and outside of motor vehicles.
Their work can include:
- using high-pressure hoses to clean the outside of vehicles
- cleaning windows, wheels, door handles and mirrors
- vacuuming and shampooing upholstery and carpets
- waxing and polishing surfaces
- applying gels and other finishes to bumpers and trims
- painting rubber dressing on the side walls of tyres
- steam cleaning the engine, frame and wheel arches
- collecting and delivering vehicles.
Some valets work from mobile units containing water, generator, power washer and wet/dry vacuum. These sometimes provide other services such as cleaning domestic carpets.
Hours and Environment
As a car valet your working hours may vary, and are likely to include weekend and seasonal work. There may be some overtime. A lot of car valet jobs are part-time.
You may work inside and outside at garages, workshops, and on customers' premises. Mobile valeting involves a lot of driving.
Skills and Interests
As a car valet, you need:
- to be physically fit
- to be methodical and able to pay attention to detail
- the ability to read and follow safety procedures and understand manufacturers' instructions and warnings
- to be self-motivated - able to work on your own without direct supervision, or as a member of a small team
- good customer service skills.
Entry
You will not need any academic qualifications to work as a car valet. It will be an advantage if you have previous experience in the motor trade, industrial/office cleaning, or dry cleaning work.
You will need a full driving licence for most jobs, so you will need to be over the age of 17.
Training
When you start work as a car valet, you will learn cleaning and polishing techniques and health and safety procedures on the job. Your employers might send you on day courses run by the manufacturers of cleaning chemicals.
If you are working as a mobile valet you will go out with trained valets until you are ready to work on your own - usually after three to six months.

If you work in a garage you might be able to work towards:
- the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) NVQ Level 2 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, which has a vehicle valeting option
- City & Guilds NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Cleaning and Support Services, which has an optional Passenger Transport unit.
Opportunities
Most jobs are in car dealerships or garages, where valets prepare new and used cars for sale.
You might also find work with:
- independent valeting companies (although these usually only employ a few staff)
- car rental firms
- mobile valeting firms (often run under franchise). These clean vehicles for private customers and work under contract to dealerships or garages.
You could also become self-employed, working for private or commercial users or for dealerships.
When you have experience, it might be possible to progress to supervisor, or to area manager in big firms which offer services to different garages.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Income for car valets ranges from around £10,000 to around £12,500 a year.
Overtime and shift payments can increase earnings.
