chartered energy engineer

Chartered energy engineers work on the sourcing and production of oil and gas. Renewable energy engineers focus on alternative energy sources such as wind, solar and wave power.

Energy engineers can work in research and development, or in the practical building and running of power stations, oil and gas drilling platforms, and alternative energy-producing machinery.

In research and development, they:

  • carry out laboratory experiments and convert these into large-scale industrial processes
  • design and develop machinery
  • use computer models and simulations to research new ways of generating energy or improving current methods.

Some energy engineers are involved in building processing plants and installing the energy processing machinery. They also operate and maintain existing plants.

Fully-qualified professional engineers usually hold incorporated or chartered status:

Chartered engineers are normally involved at a strategic planning level, or in research and development. They are often project leaders and lead teams of incorporated engineers and technicians.

Incorporated engineers solve practical engineering problems and often hold key operational management roles.

Hours and Environment

As an energy engineer your hours can vary. In research and development you will usually work 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday, with extra hours sometimes necessary to meet a project deadline. In power plant or drilling operations, you could work on a seven-day shift system that may include weekends, evenings and nights.

You could work indoors in laboratories, workshops or offices, or outdoors at a wind farm or on an offshore drilling rig. You must follow strict safety procedures and may need to wear protective clothing for some jobs.

Skills and Interests

To be an energy engineer you need:
  • an interest in science, technology and the environment
  • problem-solving ability
  • good planning and organisational skills
  • excellent mathematical and computer skills
  • the abilty to manage projects, budgets and people
  • good communication and teamworking skills
  • knowledge of electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering.
Foreign language skills can also be an advantage, because many companies are multinational.

Entry

To become a chartered engery engineer, you will need a degree (BEng or BSc) or master’s degree (MEng or MSc) in a scientific or engineering subject, such as:
  • energy and environmental technology
  • energy engineering
  • environmental engineering
  • renewable energy
  • electrical engineering
  • chemical engineering.
To get onto a relevant degree you will usually need five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3), and two A levels/three H grades including maths and a science subject. Some universities offer a foundation year for people without qualifications in maths and science. Please check with colleges or universities for exact entry requirements.

You can find details of accredited degrees and postgraduate courses from the Energy Institute's website (see Further Information section).

You will usually need a master’s degree for senior and research posts, and to achieve chartered engineer status in the future (see Training).

Training

You will normally be trained on the job, possibly through a structured graduate training scheme.

You will improve your career prospects by joining a professional engineering body like the Energy Institute, and gaining professional incorporated or chartered engineer status from the Engineering Council.
See the Engineering Council and Energy Institute websites for more information on how to gain incorporated and chartered engineer status.

The Energy Institute also offers a range of short courses for experienced engineers to keep up-to-date with new skills and technologies.

Opportunities

As an energy engineer you could be employed by:
  • the oil and gas industry
  • energy production companies
  • government and university research.
With experience, you could move into consultancy, planning or policy development. A growing number of engineers work on a freelance basis.
Renewable energy is a growth area, due to increased interest in environmental issues.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Graduates starting salaries range between £18,000 and £27,000 a year.
Experienced energy engineers can earn between £30,000 and £40,000 a year.
Senior chartered energy engineers earn £40,000 to £60,000.
