engineering craft machinist
Engineering craft machinists make precision engineered parts using machine tools to shape metal or plastics. These parts and components are used in all kinds of engineering and machinery, for example power station turbines and aero-engines. In their everyday work, craft machinists will use tools such as grinders, millers, cutters, lathes, drills and presses.
Craft machinists work from engineering drawings and pattern templates:
- to plan the sequence of the different cuts
- to set-up a roughly pre-formed blank in the jaws of the lathe, or on the fixed bed of a mill or grinder
- to choose and fit the correct cutting tool for the cut
- to calculate cutting speeds, often aided by computer.
Machinists may have to re-position a section several times and carry out different cuts with a range of cutting tools before the part is completed. They usually machine a small number or batch of the same components at a time.
Some machines are computer-numerically-controlled (CNC), which involves programming instructions into a panel to control the cutting process. See the CNC Machinist profile.
Hours and Environment
Engineering craft machinists usually work 39 hours a week, Monday to Friday. A shift system may operate in large companies with round-the-clock production. Overtime may be available.
Machinists work in factories and workshops, standing at a bench or machine. They wear overalls, protective boots, and ear defenders and goggles where necessary.
Skills and Interests
As an engineering machinist you should:
- be able to work with great precision
- have good practical skills
- be able to understand engineering drawings and instructions
- be able to calculate cutting speeds and times
- understand the strengths and other characteristics of metals
- have some keyboard and computer skills
- be able to concentrate for long periods
- have good eyesight
- be physically fit.
Entry
A common route for young people is to train as an apprentice in engineering. Most apprentices start at 16 to 19, but entry may be possible up to 24 (see Training section for contacts). You will need four GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3), such as maths, English, science, engineering, design and technology or appropriate equivalents.
Alternative qualifications open to all ages include:
- Edexcel (BTEC) First Certificate in Engineering
- BTEC National Certificates/Diplomas in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering.
These are available at local colleges. Check with them for more details.
For general information about engineering as a career, contact SEMTA and Women into Science and Engineering in Further Information. In addition, the Engineering Training Council (Northern Ireland) has careers information and a course database for local colleges. See their website in Further Information.
Training
Many companies aim to train multiskilled craftspeople rather than specialist machinists. Training is through day or block release at college. A range of work-based awards is available, including:
- City & Guilds Progression Award in Production Engineering at levels 2 and 3
- City & Guilds Progression Award in Applying Engineering Principles Level 2
- NVQ/SVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering at levels 2 and 3
- NVQ/SVQ in Wood Machining at levels 2 and 3
- NVQ/SVQ in Marine Engineering Level 3
- EAL Advanced Diploma in Engineering and Technology Level 3.
Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk
Apprenticeships may be different in other areas. For further information see Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland
Opportunities
The main job opportunities occur in mechanical engineering, motor and aerospace industries, and in shipbuilding. There may also be openings in maintenance work for industries that need to replace components regularly, such as rail transport and power.
Promotion may be possible to foreman/woman of a production section or workshop. With further training machinists can progress to engineering technician roles.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
New machinists start between £11,500 and £14,000 a year.
Experienced craft machinists earn between £15,000 and £20,000.
Machinists with additional responsibilities can earn up to £23,000.
