anatomical pathology technician
Anatomical pathology technologists (APTs) support pathologists during post-mortem examinations, which involve examining and dissecting the body, removing and weighing organs, and taking samples for laboratory analysis.
APTs assist pathologists by:
- passing instruments such as scalpels
- recording their findings
- performing special techniques such as spinal cord removal
- weighing the organs as they are taken out.
At the end of the post-mortem the body will be reconstructed, organs replaced and the body cleaned ready for release to the undertakers for burial or cremation. Technologists highly experienced in all aspects of forensic procedure may assist forensic pathologists examining murder victims.
In addition to post-mortem work, APTs are responsible for the day-to-day running of the mortuary service. Their duties include:
- keeping accurate administrative records
- receiving sudden deaths
- placing the deceased into cold storage units
- liaising with doctors, police, coroner's office staff and funeral directors
- providing information and support to the bereaved.
Hours and Environment
APTs work up to 40 hours a week; shifts and on-call duties may be required.
For post-mortem work APTs wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves, a theatre gown, visor and boots. APTs need to be able to cope with unpleasant conditions.
Skills and Interests
As an anatomical pathology technologist, you should:
- have tact and sensitivity when dealing with bereaved relatives
- have a mature and responsible attitude to work
- have good verbal communication skills
- be physically fit, able to lift heavy items and stand for long periods
- be computer literate
- have a genuine interest in science, and how the body works
- be health and safety conscious
- be methodical and able to pay attention to detail.
Entry
There are no minimum academic entry requirements for becoming a trainee anatomical pathology technologist. However, some hospitals or health authorities prefer applicants who have knowledge of science. GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) in science, maths and English may be beneficial.
Previous work experience involving record keeping, dealing with legal issues, and using practical manual skills would be an advantage. An awareness and respect for different religious beliefs surrounding death is also considered important.
Contact the human resources department of your local NHS trust for details of opportunities in your area.
Training
Trainee APTs begin by observing mortuary work and post-mortem examinations, before progressing on to assisting at the examination itself under the supervision of experienced APTs and a Pathologist. Trainees undertake mandatory training in manual handling, infection control, and health and safety, throughout which their competence is assessed.
During the first two years of working as an APT, you are expected to complete the Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH) Certificate in Anatomical Pathology Technology. The examination is in two parts and consists of a written paper and an oral test. Certificate holders may apply to be Associate Members of the RIPH.
Trainees holding the certificate may go on to complete the RIPH Diploma in Anatomical Pathological Technology. The diploma course is designed to equip you with the knowledge to take charge of a mortuary and provide a safe service and skillful assistance to the pathologist responsible for post-mortems. With the Diploma, you are eligible for full RIPH membership.
The Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists (AAPT UK) is the national association for APTs. They represent and promote the profession, and liaise with other organisations closely linked with mortuary services. They offer membership to Certificate, Diploma and trainee APTs, and those who wish to be affiliated to the AAPT (UK).
Opportunities
Most anatomical pathology technologists work in the NHS, but there are opportunities with local authority run public mortuary facilities. Currently there are more applicants than vacancies.
There is an established career structure for APTs, however, this will vary throughout the UK.
APTs with sufficient experience and the RIPH Diploma, may apply for advanced technical work or managerial posts. Many experienced APTs will be involved in training other healthcare professionals.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
A technician can earn between £14,000 and £16,800 a year.
Senior technicians, managers or supervisors may earn up to around £30,000.
There are additional payments for overtime and on-call duty, and an extra London allowance is also usually paid.
