postal delivery officer

A postal delivery officer sorts and delivers letters and small packets. They normally work in a district delivery office. Depending on duties, they may also be responsible for mail collections from post boxes, post offices and businesses within the district. Other duties can include data entry work, and van collections and deliveries.

A lot of Incoming and outgoing mail is sorted by hand on a sorting frame but busier offices also use automated mail-handling machinery like integrated mail processors (IMPs).

Each delivery officer has a round or ‘walk’ covering several hundred addresses. After sorting the mail, they go out on their walk to deliver it. For some items, such as registered post and recorded deliveries, they have to obtain a signature. Deliveries are made on foot, bicycle, or in a car or van.

Some delivery officers work in central sorting offices, dealing with mail coming in and going out across the country and overseas. They sort the mail into mailbags and then load these into vans for transportation to district offices or, depending on the destination, a road freight depot, rail station or airport.

Hours and Environment

Delivery officers work up to 41 hours a week, depending on the contract. Full-time positions include working on Saturday morning, with the early shift starting between 5am and 6am. Night shifts, part-time and seasonal work are widely available.

The delivery work is outdoors, at all times of the year and in all weathers. Delivery officers are required to carry delivery pouches up to a maximum load of 16kg.

The employer provides a uniform and footwear, and there are subsidised meals in larger delivery offices.

Skills and Interests

As a postal delivery officer, you need to be:

  • physically fit
  • reliable, honest and trustworthy
  • punctual
  • literate and numerate
  • able to deal with repetitive tasks quickly and efficiently
  • able to work to a delivery schedule
  • able to undertake clerical tasks such as re-directing mail
  • able to use a keyboard
  • confident and polite in dealing with the public
  • able to work alone or as part of a team
  • aware of health and safety issues.

Entry

There are no formal entry requirements. Selection usually involves an aptitude test and interview. The test may require you to demonstrate the ability to read addresses properly and check for errors among a list of names and addresses. You may also have to pass a medical examination.

Recruitment for the job is usually from the age of 18 but apprenticeships are available for people aged between 16 and 24.

For driving duties, a clean current driving licence is necessary.

The Royal Mail website in Further Information has details about careers in the postal service, job vacancies and apprenticeships.

Training

You receive on-the-job training. Initially, there may be two to three days' induction at a head office, before you relocate to your nearest district office.
You will work under supervision of experienced members of staff. There may also be short external courses in addition to the supervised training.

Once employed, you can work towards NVQ Mail Services at Level 2. Units include:
  • sorting mail
  • delivering mail
  • using automated systems
  • collecting and transporting mail.

Opportunities

Opportunities exist throughout the country and recruitment is normally through the local sorting office. The large mail centres that sort and distribute mail also employ hundreds of people.

Promotion to higher grades, such as supervisor and manager is possible with experience.

There may be opportunities to move into similar areas of the business such as parcel deliveries, courier work, post office counter work, or customer care and administration within district or main offices.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Full-time salary at 16 is £10,000 a year.
At 17, this rises to just under £11,700.
At 18, salary is £15,000 during the first six months, rising to £15,800 in the next six months.
At 18 or over with 12 months' service, salary is around £16,700 a year.

There are supplementary payments for unsocial hours, driving duties and other responsibilities. There is also a London weighting.

Supervisors and managers are paid on a different scale.
