Colon Hydrotherapist
Colon hydrotherapy is a treatment designed to cleanse the colon of waste products and toxins. It can be done to alleviate certain medical conditions as well as to improve general health and well being. Colon hydrotherapists, who may also be known as colonic irrigationists, deliver this treatment.
At the start of a session, the therapist will begin by taking details from the client about their medical history, lifestyle, diet, and any symptoms or areas of concern. They will then discuss an appropriate treatment programme with the client.
The main part of the treatment involves inserting a tube filled with filtered water warmed to body temperature into the client's body. The tube is repeatedly flushed with water to cleanse the colon and flush out any waste products. This process may be accompanied by massaging the abdomen and other pressure points.
When the treatment has finished, hydrotherapists dispose of fluids in accordance with set procedures, and prepare the room and sterilise equipment before the next treatment.
Colon hydrotherapists may make suggestions for further health improvements regarding diet and lifestyle. Therapists may need to refer people to doctors or other health professionals when necessary.
Hours and Environment
There are usually no set working hours as most colon hydrotherapists have to be flexible to meet the needs of their clients. Sessions will take around 90 minutes, including a consultation and time for the client to change before and after the treatment. The treatment itself will last approximately 45 minutes.
Therapists usually work in private consulting rooms with access to specialist equipment.
Skills and Interests
To be a colon hydrotherapist, you should:
- enjoy working with a range of clients and have patience and understanding
- have good communication and listening skills
- be able to help people feel at ease when discussing their requirements
- have a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology
- demonstrate a keen awareness of health and related practices and procedures
- have a genuine desire to help people and respect their privacy.
Entry
There is no statutory regulation for colon hydrotherapists. The Guild of Colon Hydrotherapists (GCH) and the Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists are involved in setting the standard and monitoring the training of hydrotherapists. To register with either organisation you must complete a recognised training course at an approved centre. Each organisation holds a list of approved course providers on their website (see Training section for further details).
To gain entry onto a recognised training course you need:
- to be qualified in conventional medicine (for example, a nurse or doctor); or
- to hold a degree in a body-based therapy (not colon hydrotherapy), which includes in-depth training in anatomy and physiology.
You will also need at least two years' relevant experience after you have qualified, for example, as a doctor, nurse or therapist. The Guild, and the Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists can provide details on this; check Further Information for contact details.
For information about the entry requirements for a degree course, please check with course providers. For entry into medicine or nursing, please check relevant job profiles.
In Scotland, The Institute of Professional Colon Hydrotherapy maintain a register of qualified therapists who meet their standards and adhere to their code of ethics and practise. To get on to the register you need to meet very similar requirements to that of the Guild, and Association (outlined above). The Institutes website holds more details; see Further Information.
Training
Training programmes in colon hydrotherapy, which are recognised by the Guild and the Association, will usually involve:
- further study of anatomy and physiology, focusing on the colon and digestive system
- nutrition
- cardio vascular system
- muscular skeletal structure
- colonic procedure (assisting, then carrying out treatments)
- using and sterilising specialist equipment
- business management.
When you meet the satisfactory standard you will be eligible for accreditation and membership of either the GCH or the Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists. For details of training centres, check their websites for details; see Further Information.
Some colon hydrotherapists join the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT). They hold details of I-ACT approved course providers around the world, including the UK. They have four membership levels; foundation, intermediate, advanced and instructor. Check the Association's website for details.
As a colon hydrotherapist, you may be able to join the British Register of Complementary Practitioners administered by the Institute for Complementary Medicine. See Further Information for contact details.
Opportunities
Interest in alternative and complementary therapies has increased considerably in recent years. You may find opportunities to work in a variety of settings such as health resorts, gyms, salons, doctor's surgeries, natural health centres and spa's. You may be able to diversify, and work in other areas such as aromatherapy, and massage therapy.
You need to be prepared to market your business if you are self-employed. This will often involve working long hours at first until you have built up your reputation.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Many colon hydrotherapists are self-employed, and charge an hourly rate which can be around £55 to £75 a session. This is unlikely to be clear profit and business costs, such as rent and materials, will need to be covered by this.
