Colour Therapist

Colour therapists suggest the body absorbs light which is interpreted by the brain as colour. The colours we absorb affect the nervous system and the release of hormones, which may in turn affect our mental, emotional and physical state.

Colour therapists believe that illness can occur when too much, too little, or the wrong colour and light exists within the body. Therapists aim to address a colour imbalance by exposing the body to an appropriate colour source. This should allow healing to take place.

Practitioners usually begin a session by establishing the client’s medical history and colour preferences. Colour therapy can be used to treat a range of conditions including depression, eczema, high blood pressure, and menstrual problems. Colour therapists can use a variety of techniques when treating a colour imbalance. Treatments can include:

  • breathing exercises
  • the use of light and colour to irradiate the whole body, spine, or a localised area
  • placing coloured fabrics on the body
  • applying bottles of coloured fluid to an area
  • using a pendulum to dowse a chart of the spine for energy imbalances.

Therapists may also advise on the use of colour in dress, décor and diet, and teach clients how to perform visualisations with colour. Therapists working with auras believe they can ‘see’ which colours are required to address an imbalance.

Hours and Environment

There are no set working hours and colour therapists may be required to work unsocial hours to accommodate the needs of their clients.

Practitioners spend time sitting, standing and bending. They may work from home, in private consultation rooms, or in their clients' homes.

Skills and Interests

To be a colour therapist, you should:

  • be able to develop empathy with patients
  • have good listening skills to determine the best treatment
  • have a genuine desire to help people
  • be emotionally stable and self-aware
  • recognise when to refer clients to a qualified medical doctor
  • have commercial skills to help you run a business.

Entry

Colour therapy is an unregulated profession and there are no set entry requirements for colour therapy courses. Previous experience or qualifications in counselling, anatomy and physiology may be useful, and possibly essential when studying at higher levels.

There are a variety of colour therapy courses available; shorter courses tend to be introductory or for general interest only.

It is not unusual for people to have had another career before they begin training in colour therapy. Experience of working in a caring profession can be helpful but not essential. Life experience, a mature and caring attitude and the ability to relate well to other people is highly regarded.

A driving licence is useful and possibly essential for travelling to between clients.

Training

The Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) and International Institute of Health and Holistic Therapists (IIHHT) award certificates and diplomas in colour therapy. Please check with the individual awarding bodies for details; see Further Information.

The International Association of Colour (IAC) approves several Colour Training Centres (CTCs). They offer:

  • a range of certificate and diploma courses - diplomas are likely to take two years, some courses are available by distance learning
  • a membership scheme - full membership is open to graduates of recognised colour schools, healers established for three years or more, and therapists of other disciplines.

Check the IAC website for details; see Further Information.

Diploma level colour therapy courses are likely to include studying subjects such as:

  • psychology
  • philosophy
  • anatomy and physiology
  • colour treatment techniques
  • consultation and counselling procedures
  • health and safety
  • simple accounts
  • advertising and self-employment.

The second year will usually involve working unpaid with clients, under the supervision of a tutor.

The Institute for Complementary Medicine (ICM) administers the British Register of Complementary Practitioners (BRCP) a professional register of skilled practitioners. To join the register you need to prove your competence by meeting the standards set by the ICM Registration Panel, or have achieved an approved qualification. Membership is available for therapists, practitioners and advanced practitioners. The ICM also hold a list of colour therapy courses which meet their standards; check the ICM website for details.

Opportunities

Colour therapy combines well with other therapies; some reflexologists and acupuncturists use colour therapy techniques as part of their practise.

Colour therapists wishing to increase their skills and knowledge of complementary therapies may find reflexology, aromatherapy, massage, crystals, and yoga of particular interest. Professionals working in fashion, or interior design and decoration, also work with colour.

Some practitioners move into teaching colour therapy. To meet the standards set by the IAC, teachers in Colour Training Centres are required to be qualified in their subject, and have a teaching qualification or proven experience.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Colour therapists are usually self-employed and charge an hourly rate which may vary considerably, ranging from £30 to £60 an hour. This is unlikely to be clear profit and usually they earn around £10 an hour after expenses.

Many therapists support their income by undertaking additional work in another field.
