Dance Movement Therapist
Dance movement therapists (DMTs) use dance and movement to help people with a wide range of emotional, social, psychological and physical difficulties.
Therapists can work with individuals as well as groups and families. They can help clients to:
- improve their self-esteem and perception of their body image
- develop effective communication skills
- gain insights into their patterns of behaviour
- assist clients to develop strategies to manage their lives.
They work with people of all ages and with a wide variety of conditions. This type of therapy has the potential to help people who have:
- an eating disorder
- autism
- suffered abuse or violence in the past
- dysfunctional families
- severe emotional disorders.
Therapists use dance and movement to increase body awareness, stimulate spontaneous expressions of feelings and promote social interaction.
Dance movement therapy is based on the belief that movement reflects an individual's pattern of thinking and feeling. It can help anyone with emotional problems, conflict or distress. People may also use it simply for personal growth.
Hours and Environment
Dance movement therapists work in a variety of settings including hospitals, psychiatric and rehabilitation units, schools and private practice.
Working hours are usually 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, however, some weekend and evening work may be required. There are very few full-time positions. Many therapists work on a sessional basis.
The work often involves travel and can be physically and emotionally demanding.
Skills and Interests
To be a dance movement therapist you should:
- have a creative imagination to devise suitable programmes for clients
- be experienced in at least one form of dance and movement
- have the maturity and emotional stability to work with clients who may be suffering from mental or physical illness, or emotional problems
- have good communication skills
- be physically fit
- be interested in the arts, health, healing and complementary therapies
- have an understanding of psychology, anatomy and physiology.
Entry
Dance movement therapists must complete a postgraduate qualification recognised by the Association of Dance Movement Therapists (ADMTUK). Applicants need to have a degree in a relevant subject such as dance, performing arts, psychology, medicine, nursing, or an equivalent professional qualification.
Entry requirements for a degree are usually at least five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) plus two A levels/three H grades, or equivalent qualifications. An Access to Higher Education qualification may also be accepted for entry to certain courses. Please check with colleges or universities for exact entry requirements.
Applicants to the postgraduate course are also likely to need:
- at least one years' relevant work experience, for example, leading a creative or movement group; this may be paid or voluntary
- a minimum of two years' experience of at least one dance or movement form, and some experience in a variety of forms.
If you don't have a degree, but have considerable relevant experience you may also be considered for entry onto the postgraduate course. Contact the ADMTUK for details of alternative entry routes and details of accredited courses (see Further Information).
Maturity and the ability to communicate through movement will usually be assessed during interview for the postgraduate course.
The minimum age for entering DMT training is 23 years.
Training
Postgraduate courses in Dance Movement Therapy take a minimum of two years. Subjects studied include anatomy, psychology, psychotherapy and movement observation.
Courses usually involve at least 200 hours of direct client contact and 100 hours of clinical supervision.
It is an ADMTUK requirement that students undergo person therapy for the duration of their two year programme.
There are two levels of registration with the ADMTUK.
- Registered Dance Movement Therapist (RDMT) – competent to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a variety of settings.
- Senior Registered Dance Movement Therapist (seniorRDMT) – able to work in private practice, teaching DMT and clinical supervision.
The ADMTUK highlight the need for continuing professional development for practitioners within the profession, and seek to provide opportunities for you to acquire this.
Opportunities
Employment opportunities as a dance movement therapist are widely available. The majority of these are in London and other major urban areas. Successful clinical placements whilst training sometimes lead to students being offered paid work, usually on a part-time basis.
There are few full-time posts, so part-time or sessional work is common.
It is possible to set up in private practice after around 2 years' initial experience and many DMTs work as self-employed or freelance. Training and consultancy options are also available.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
DMT posts in the NHS start at around £18,000 to £20,000 per year.
For senior therapists, earnings ca rise to between £30,000 and £60,000 a year.
Self-employed therapists charge between £25 and £50 per hour session.
