Dramatherapist
Dramatherapists use group work and role-play to encourage people to come to terms with a range of feelings and emotions. They help clients to develop their imagination and the creative side of their personality. Dramatherapists aim to bring about positive change and psychological healing in their clients.
Dramatherapists use a range of methods to engage clients. They encourage people to:
- work as part of a group
- form one-to-one relationships
- express what they feel and think about the world around them
- act out situations in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
Dramatherapists build on a person's own experiences and also on traditional myths and stories. They seek to enable clients to develop their own insight and personal strengths.
They work closely with other professionals such as psychologists, social workers, teachers and other therapy specialists.
Dramatherapists are state registered and regulated by the Health Professions Council (HPC).
Hours and Environment
Dramatherapists often have uncertain and irregular working hours, sometimes working on short-term projects in a number of different locations.
As a dramatherapist you may run sessions with clients in a variety of places such as schools, hospitals, prisons and day centres. A driving licence will be useful when travelling between sessions.
Skills and Interests
To be a dramatherapist you need:
- excellent communication skills
- an interest and experience in drama and theatrical work
- the desire to understand and help people with their problems
- a lively and imaginative approach to work
- to be versatile, with the ability to address situations in different ways
- a good understanding of the principles and working practice of therapy
- patience and perseverance, to sustain a possibly lengthy therapeutic relationship
- to be mentally capable of dealing with distressing situations.
Entry
To practise as a dramatherapist you need a postgraduate or Masters qualification approved by the British Association of Dramatherapists (BADth). When you have completed an appropriate course you need to register with the Health Professions Council (HPC). Course providers are listed on the websites of the BADth and HPC; see Further Information.
The entry requirements for a postgraduate or Masters in Dramatherapy are likely to include:
- a degree in a related subject such as drama or psychology
- practical drama experience
- voluntary or paid experience helping people overcome problems or difficulties.
The minimum academic entry requirements for a degree course are usually five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) plus two A levels/three H grades. Subjects of particular relevance include drama, psychology and theatre studies. Please check with colleges or universities for exact entry details.
Many people go into dramatherapy after a first career in an area such as teaching, acting, community or social work.
Training
Dramatherapy courses approved by the BADth and HPC will usually take you one year full-time or two-years' part-time study.
On the postgraduate or Masters course you will learn about areas such as:
- practical drama and theatre skills
- the study of psychological and therapeutic principles and practices
- working in a dramatherapy training group
- art, music, dance and play therapies
- dramatherapy practice
- personal development.
As a practising dramatherapist, you will receive regular supervision from an experienced therapist who is a trained supervisor. You are also expected to keep your skills and knowledge up-to-date. The BADth list contacts for short courses and workshops on their website (see Further Information).
Opportunities
As a dramatherapist you will find most opportunities in the NHS and with local social services departments, although there are possibilities for work in schools, with voluntary organisations and in private practice. As a dramatherapist, work opportunities will often depend on organisations gaining funding for particular projects.
With experience, you may go on to lead a team of therapists or manage a unit. Many dramatherapists work on a freelance basis.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
A newly qualified full-time dramatherapist working in the NHS can earn between £23,000 and £31,000 a year.
A dramatherapist with experience may earn up to around £36,500 a year.
A principle, or team manager can earn up to £42,500.
