Homeopath
Homeopathy aims to cure illnesses by stimulating the body’s own natural healing powers. The practice uses tiny amounts of a substance which, if given in full strength to a healthy person, would produce similar symptoms to the illness being treated, to trigger a natural response. Homeopaths measure and deliver these substances to their clients, with the aim of curing or alleviating their symptoms.
A homeopath will usually begin a consultation by taking a detailed history from their patient including areas such as lifestyle, ailments, attitude to life, diet, life events and moods. From this information they build up a picture of their client's symptoms and match them to the appropriate remedy.
Homeopathy is often used to treat mental, emotional and physical symptoms in people of all ages. It can be used for a wide range of conditions, for example, sore throats, fevers, arthritis, eczema and anxiety.
Hours and Environment
As a homeopath you will normally work to an appointment schedule and choose your own working hours. You may need to work outside office hours to accommodate your patients' needs.
You will spend the majority of your time sitting down in the consultation room.
Skills and Interests
To be a homeopath you should:
- be able to build up a rapport with patients
- have good communication skills, for both listening and explaining what you are doing
- be logical in your approach to problem solving, working out a diagnosis and deciding on a suitable treatment
- be able to detach yourself from what the patient is saying, rather than becoming emotionally involved
- know when to refer a patient to a conventional medical doctor
- have an interest and ability in science, particularly biology and chemistry
- have sound commercial sense for running a business.
Entry
It is important to achieve a qualification recognised by one of the main professional bodies if you wish to work in this field.
The Society of Homeopaths (SOH) approve courses that lead to a diploma or degree in Homeopathic Medicine. Courses are often available full- or part-time. Studying part-time for a diploma or degree level course will usually take a minimum of four years and will often be made up of 10 to 15 weekend workshops a year, or a similar number of two day blocks midweek. Some courses combine distance learning with part-time attendance. Full-time courses may be completed in three years or fewer. See the SOH website for a list of institutions in England, Wales and Scotland that offer recognised training.
Entry requirements for a diploma will usually include four GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3), with at least one science subject, plus one or two A levels/H grades, again with at least one science subject. For a degree, you are likely to need five GCSEs plus two or three A levels, or equivalent qualifications. An Access to Higher Education qualification may also be accepted for entry to certain courses.
Life experience and the ability to relate well to other people are also taken into consideration when you apply for a course. Check with colleges or universities for exact entry requirements.
On completion of a course, you will be able to apply for Licensed Membership of the SOH.
Postgraduate courses
The Faculty of Homeopathy (FOH) accredit postgraduate homeopathy courses aimed at qualified medical practitioners or state registered health care professionals such as dentists, pharmacists, nurses, midwives or podiatrists. See the FOH website in Further Information below for more details.
Training
As a qualified homeopath you will be able to register with various professional bodies.
- the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths (ARH) offer professional membership to homeopathy graduates and practising homeopaths in the UK. Applicants must present a portfolio of cases when applying.
- the Homeopathic Medical Association (HMA) requires their members to have a qualification in homeopathy, plus 100 hours of supervised practise. Applicants for membership must submit a number of case studies, have an interview with the HMA and may be observed at work.
- the British Register of Complementary Practitioners require homeopaths to have completed an approved course of training including clinical practice, give a presentation on a number of cases, and attend an interview.
You will also be able to attend seminars and short courses to update your knowledge and skills. Many of the professional bodies run a programme of continuing professional development for their members. See Further Information below for contact details.
Opportunities
Homeopathy is a growing area of work, with more and more people looking beyond traditional medicine to treat health conditions. As a homeopath you can work within the NHS or in private practice. You can also practise in homeopathic hospitals or private clinics.
Most homeopaths are self-employed. Some homeopaths are already qualified GPs.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Many homeopaths charge an hourly rate, usually between £25 and £50 an hour.
A newly qualified homeopath can earn around £15,000 to £20,000 a year, depending on the number of patients, the practice and its reputation.
Once a practice is established, earnings can be around £30,000 to £50,000 a year.
