Nutritional Therapist

Nutritional therapists work with patients to identify and eliminate stressful substances in the body. By pinpointing an appropriate diet, therapists suggest they can alleviate or prevent illness. Nutritional therapy is a way of using diet and supplements to encourage the body’s natural healing.

Nutritional therapists work with clients, encouraging them to take responsibility for their own health. They carry out diagnostic tests – using hair samples and allergy testing - and take a medical history from the client, which includes looking at moods, stress, digestion, diet, exercise and family history.

Once the nutritional therapist has all the necessary information they recommend a tailored programme for their client. This will focus on which foods to eliminate or increase, together with suggested supplements.

Nutritional therapy can help people of all ages with a wide range of conditions.

Hours and Environment

Nutritional therapists usually work in a health clinic or therapeutic environment or occasionally in patients’ homes. There are no set working hours - unsocial hours may be required to accommodate patients.

Therapists often work at several centres, therefore a driving licence will be useful.

Skills and Interests

As a nutritional therapist you should:

  • be able to develop empathy with your patients and be sensitive to their needs
  • have a genuine desire to help people
  • be able to understand scientific and nutritional concepts and information
  • be able to explain nutritional information and treatment plans to clients
  • have good communication skills, including listening and understanding
  • have a logical approach to problem solving
  • be able to keep an emotional distance from other people’s problems
  • know when to refer a patient to a conventional medical practitioner.

Entry

Although there is no single statutory regulatory body for nutritional therapy in the UK, there are a number of professional associations working together towards voluntary regulation within this field. The Nutritional Therapy Council (NTC) is leading the way with professional voluntary self-regulation of nutritional therapists.

The NTC is working with three other organisations to accredit training courses and register practitioners. The professional bodies involved are:

  • the British Association of Nutritional Therapists (BANT)
  • the Register of Nutritional Therapists (RNT)
  • the Wholistic Nutritional Medicine Society (WNMS).

The NTC provide information on how to choose a suitable course, and a list of course providers; check their website for details.

Practitioner level courses approved by the main professional bodies usually lead to a degree or diploma in nutritional therapy.

Entry onto a degree will usually require at least five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) plus two or three A levels/H grades, or equivalent qualifications, including a science subject. Entry requirements for a diploma may differ.

An Access to Higher Education qualification may also be accepted for entry to certain courses. Please check with colleges or universities for exact entry requirements.

Postgraduate courses are also available. Entrants at this level might be qualified medical practitioners, or state registered health care professionals such as dentists, pharmacists, nurses or midwives.

Training

National Occupational Standards for nutritional therapy have been set by the Sector Skills Council, Skills for Health. The NTC have put together a core curriculum based on these standards, setting out the key areas which accredited training courses must cover. The main areas are:

  • health sciences
  • nutritional therapeutics
  • practice management
  • practitioner development
  • clinical practice.
Current recommendations are that courses should include a minimum of 50 hours supervised clinical practice.

Nutritional therapists registered with the main professional bodies are expected to be continuously developing their skills and knowledge by attending lectures, seminars and workshops. The NTC is developing a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.

Opportunities

Demand for nutritional therapy is increasing with opportunities throughout the country. Nutritional therapists may work in private practice and with other organisations such as prisons, the NHS and mental health groups.

There are no direct promotion prospects as many practitioners are self-employed and success will depend on building up and maintaining a sound reputation and client base. Nutritional therapists need to be prepared to market their business, often working long hours at first until they have built up their practice.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

The majority of nutritional therapists are self-employed and incomes vary considerably. Most charge either a sessional or hourly rate, usually ranging from £20 to £60 an hour.

Newly qualified nutritional therapists can earn around £15,000 a year.
Experienced therapists can earn £20,000 to £30,000 a year.
