Pilates Teacher
Pilates teachers combine gentle focused exercises with holistic principles in order to develop body awareness. Pilates teachers work with clients on either mats or specially designed equipment in order to enable the body to move with maximum efficiency and minimum effort. They aim to realign the body's structure and achieve a balance within the musclo-skeletal system.
The work may incorporate both equipment and mat work classes. Equipment classes utilise specialist equipment in order to isolate and develop specific muscle groups. Mat work classes utilise exercises and movement sequences on floor mats only. Pilates teachers work with small groups of clients, usually between 4-12 people, of varying ages and capabilities or one to one.
Pilates teachers design exercises that are individually tailored to suit the needs and abilities of clients, therefore Pilates teachers are required to assess clients' fitness requirements.
Hours and Environment
Pilates teachers need to have a flexible approach to working hours. Weekend and evening work is common. Pilates teachers may have to work during holiday periods if employed by a leisure or health centre.
Pilates teachers work in studios that focus on creating a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Studios vary in style and the range of equipment on offer.
Some travel may be involved, especially by freelance Pilates teachers.
Skills and Interests
To be a Pilates teacher, you should:
- be trained and experienced in Pilates fitness applications
- have experience of dance, movement or exercise
- be patient, caring and interested in people
- be able to motivate individuals and groups
- be committed to giving the time needed to improve the body’s posture and alignment.
Entry
Several organisations within the Pilates industry offer training. Currently, the OCR Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Exercise and Fitness (in the context of Pilates) will enable you to gain entry on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), which is also known as the 'Exercise Register', as a Level 2 Instructor in Exercise and Movement.
REPs has been set up to help safeguard the health and interests of people who are using the services of exercise and fitness instructors, teachers and trainers. The Register uses a process of self-regulation that recognises industry-based qualifications and practical competency, and requires fitness professionals to work within a Code of Practice. Full details can be found on the REPs website. Please see the Further Information section for contact details.
The OCR qualification involves studying areas such as anatomy, physiology, teaching practice, and a specialist unit on planning and teaching Pilates.
There are no academic entry requirements, instead most applicants will have a background in exercise, movement or a related physical therapy, or have been attending regular Pilates classes.
This is considered within the Pilates industry as the foundation to becoming a fully- rounded Pilates teacher.
There are no barriers to adult entry and mature applicants are welcome.
All practicing teachers must hold adequate and valid insurance cover and a current certificate in CPR (resuscitation).
SkillsActive, in consultation with UK Pilates organisations, teachers, trainers and employers, have now developed level 3 National Occupational Standards for Pilates; these will provide the basis for approved qualifications and registration to the Register of Exercise Professionals at Level 3, to indicate a fully qualified Pilates teacher. The new standards are available on the SkillsActive website. Please see the Further Information section for contact details.
Training
In addition to the level 2 OCR certificate outlined in the Entry section, further instruction is required if you wish to be considered a fully trained Pilates teacher. Many professional organisations provide a professional membership scheme which promotes and supports Pilates practitioners, but also demands they meet certain teaching standards, and follow an established code of practice.
Until August 2005, SkillsActive did not recognise any training beyond level 2. However, now that the new standards are in place training providers will be able to seek approval for their courses against the standards, and practitioners will be able to work towards membership of REPs at level 3. Further details of recognised courses and qualifications will be available from SkillsActive and REPs as they are approved. At present those holding a Body Control Pilates award are eligible for entry at this level.
Each organisation is different, but currently they generally suggest that further instructor training should be in the form of a 12-18 month part-time teacher training diploma course.
Training is divided into modules, usually culminating in written and practical examinations. The modules covered may include:
- matwork (various levels)
- classical Pilates repertoire
- Pilates equipment
- work with specific groups (pregnant women, seniors)
- movement and physical analysis
- applications of the method for rehabilitating injury
- benefits of referral and screening
- first aid training
- supervised teaching practice
- business skills and studio management.
Opportunities
There is a growing demand for Pilates teachers in health studios and leisure centres, as well as working in clients' homes as a private tutor. Opportunities are increasing as Pilates is popular with athletes and dancers, and is often used to rehabilitate injuries.
Annual Income
There are no set salary rates for Pilates teachers. Many are self-employed and income varies depending on the number of clients, the tutors reputation and contacts.
