Reiki Healer
Reiki, meaning "universal life energy", is an ancient method of energy healing founded in Japan at the end of the 19th century. Reiki healers guide energy through to the body of their client to activate the healing processes within them. Practitioners believe that when someone is ill or stressed the universal life force or energy, which is within everyone, is blocked; Reiki aims to release this.
There are many different systems of Reiki but a common theme is the use of Reiki to help physical, mental, emotional and spiritual problems. It is used to renew vitality, induce feelings of serenity and relaxation, and to relieve problems caused by stress, tension, chronic illness and post-operative pain. Reiki can be used in conjunction with traditional medicine and other complementary therapies.
During a Reiki session, the client lies fully clothed on a bed or chair whilst the healer places their hands in a sequence of positions over the client's body. The whole body is treated rather than specific symptoms or areas. Treatment can take between one and two hours. Reiki is non-diagnostic, non-interventionist, non-manipulative and no pressure is applied.
Hours and Environment
There are no set working hours. Unsocial hours may be worked to accommodate their clients.
Healers are likely to work in a quiet room where their clients can lie comfortably on a couch. Some offer a service in clients’ homes. No special equipment is needed. Reiki healers spend a lot of time on their feet, bending over clients.
Skills and Interests
To be a Reiki healer you should :
- be comfortable with close contact with clients
- be patient, polite, sensitive and non-judgmental
- be able to empathise with clients to understand what they are going through
- have a genuine desire to help others
- have good verbal communication skills to explain the treatment to clients
- have good listening skills
- be able to keep accurate records of treatment
- have a gentle, light and comfortable touch
- be able to inspire confidence in clients.
Entry
There is no regulated training programme which must be followed in order to become a professional Reiki practitioner. There are a number of ways to train in Reiki; the method you choose will depend on which system of Reiki you wish to pursue (check Training section for details).
There are no set entry requirements which must be met before you can begin a programme of training in Reiki. A background or qualifications in counselling, other complementary therapies or health care may be useful. Practical experience of working with people with a variety of physical and emotional problems would provide insight into this work.
Prior to beginning a course of training you need to personally experience some form of Reiki healing to show an understanding of the treatment and procedures.
There is no minimum age for training but you do need to be able to win clients’ confidence, so a mature and caring attitude is essential.
Training
Traditionally, training is undertaken by studying with a Reiki master (teacher). This involves a series of 'attunements' or initiations, which are procedures performed by the Reiki master. The aim of the attunement is to activate certain energy centres within the trainee to allow the universal life energy to flow freely. This harmonises the trainee with Reiki energy so they can receive and pass it on to others.
To achieve full Reiki master status usually takes at least three years during which time you are expected to have practised Reiki regularly.
A number colleges also offer Reiki courses at introductory level, through to advanced. It is possible to achieve a certificate or diploma awarded by an exam body such as the VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust) or the OCN (Open College Network).
Which ever method of training you choose, subjects covered include self-healing techniques, how to heal others, hand positions, distance healing and meditation.
The Reiki Association and the UK Reiki Federation provide information on choosing a master and the different systems of Reiki. The master you choose to study under will depend on which system of Reiki you wish to follow.
Opportunities
Many Reiki healers offer other therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy, or they may combine it with another career such as nursing.
There are limited opportunities to work in a variety of medical settings such as hospitals, hospices, or attached to a GP surgery or natural health centre. Practitioners may work from home, from a rented room in a clinic or other premises, or from several of these places.
Practitioners need to be prepared to market their business if they are self-employed, often working long hours at first until they have built up their practice.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Most Reiki healers are self-employed and the rates they charge vary considerably, depending on which part of the country they are practising in and the length of the session. The charge may be anything between £20 and £70 for a session lasting one to two hours.
