Yoga Therapist

Yoga therapists aim to facilitate the body's own natural healing processes. They use the ancient art of yoga to treat clients with a wide range of ailments, using a combination of simple movements and postures, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques in order to promote good health and a sense of inner peace and relaxation.

Yoga therapists adapt traditional yoga for people with health problems, taking into account the client's physical condition. Yoga therapy may help with a variety of conditions including anxiety, depression, asthma and arthritis. This therapy can be used in conjunction with traditional medicine and other complementary therapies.

A yoga therapist will initially assess the client's condition and then recommend an appropriate programme of therapy, which will involve either one-to-one sessions or attending classes.

Hours and Environment

Yoga therapists have no set working hours - unsocial hours may be required to meet the needs of clients.

The work is usually indoors in places such as sports centres, health clinics and in other therapeutic environments. Therapists may work at several centres, therefore a driving licence would be an advantage. Very little equipment is needed other than a non-slip mat for safety.

Skills and Interests

As a yoga therapist you should:

  • be skilled in yoga practice
  • have a genuine desire to help people
  • have good communication and listening skills
  • be able to understand medical terms and information
  • have a logical approach to problem solving, offering clear solutions to complaints
  • be physically fit.

Entry

To practise as a yoga therapist you will need:

  • to be a qualified yoga teacher, preferably with some yoga teaching experience (see Yoga Teacher profile)
  • to complete an approved yoga therapy foundation course
  • to undertake an approved diploma in yoga therapy.
The Yoga Biomedical Trust (YBT) and the Life Centre (LC) have joined together to create the Foundation Course in Yoga Therapy, as well as a modular Diploma in Yoga Therapy.

The foundation course is run over four weekends, and provides an introduction to yoga therapy for practising and qualified yoga teachers. When you have successfully completed the foundation course, you can go on to the diploma course modules.

There are no set academic entry requirements for the foundation course but knowledge of anatomy and physiology will be helpful. In addition you will need to be able to prove that you can cope with the academic content of the course which is regarded as postgraduate level. For more details on entry requirements, contact the YBT and LC who will be able to check with you the eligibility of your yoga teaching qualification.

Entrants with medical or paramedical experience may be exempt from parts of the diploma course.

Training

The YBT and LC modular Yoga Therapy Diploma can be studied over a period of two years' or more, and will usually include 24 weekends and a residential retreat.

The diploma course combines the theoretical study of areas such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, the respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems, with home study, practical work and yoga practice. Please contact the YBT or LC for more details (see Further Information).

The diploma is recognised by the Institute of Complementary Medicine and the NHS. On completion of the course students will become accredited YBT/LC yoga therapy practitioners.

Opportunities

Therapists may work in medical practices, hospitals, clinics, holistic health centres, health clubs, special needs centres and in industry.

Career prospects are likely to be dictated by demand for the therapy and also by the individual practitioner's ability to build up a business, either alone or with partners. Reputations are built on personal recommendation and successful diagnosis and treatment. Some therapists teach as well as practise.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Most yoga practitioners are self-employed and incomes can vary considerably.
Most charge either a sessional or hourly rate, usually ranging from £20 to £60 an hour.

A new entrant may earn around £11,000 a year.
A practitioner with experience may earn up to £27,000 a year.
