horse groom

Horse grooms, sometimes known as stable lads/girls or stable hands, look after horses, making sure they are healthy and in good condition.

Their work includes:

  • mucking out stables
  • cleaning tack
  • providing fresh water
  • preparing feed
  • replacing bedding
  • checking for changes in the horse's condition and reporting problems
  • following instructions from vets when treatment is needed
  • sometimes treating minor wounds, changing dressings and giving medication
  • cleaning, brushing and sometimes clipping horses' coats.

Some grooms are also responsible for exercising of the horses each day.

Grooms who work with show jumpers or race horses prepare horses for events, and may accompany them. In studs and breeding yards grooms work with stallions and/or mares and foals. They may assist vets in delivering foals. Grooms working in riding schools may greet clients, lead riders out on foot and accompany them on horseback.

Hours and Environment

As a grooms you will usually work 40 hours a week, including early mornings, late nights and weekends. Overtime is often available and you may be able to do part-time or casual work.

You will need to be prepared to work in cold, wet and muddy conditions, and will need to wear protective clothing and footwear.

You may be provided with accommodation, but this can be basic and you may have to share. Because the work can include travelling, it will be useful if you have a driving licence.

Skills and Interests

To be a horse groom you should:

  • be physically fit
  • have good observational skills
  • be patient and willing to do routine tasks
  • be aware of health and safety issues
  • be able to work alone and as part of a team
  • have good communication skills
  • be a competent rider with experience of looking after horses (you may not need this when starting some jobs).

Entry

You must be at least 16, and some jobs have weight restrictions. Although you do not need any formal qualifications, some employers will prefer you to have a nationally recognised qualification and experience.

You could get practical experience as a volunteer, for example helping out at a local stables, before looking for paid work.

Relevant qualifications include:

  • BTEC/Edexcel First Certificate and Diploma in Horse Care and National Diploma in Horse Management
  • British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 1 in Horse Knowledge and Care
  • the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) Preliminary Horse Care and Riding Certificate.

There are no entry requirements for BHS or ABRS qualifications, but you must be at least 16 and will usually need experience of handling and riding horses.

You can get full details of qualifications by visiting the BHS and ABRS websites. Please see Further Information for a link to the website.

The British Racing School in Newmarket and the Northern Racing College in Doncaster are the main centres where you can do training in race-horse care. You will not need riding experience - although most trainees do ride there is a non-rider option up to NVQ level 2. If you are interested in the breeding industry you can do training at the National Stud in Newmarket or at other training centres. You can get details from the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association - there is a link to their website in Further Information below.

Both of these types of training are open to anyone, and are free if you are an EU citizen aged between 16 and 25. You can find full details of careers in horse-racing and breeding on the British Horse Racing Board careers website - see Further Information below for a link.

You may be able to get into this job through an apprenticeship scheme. Funding for apprenticeships is available for 16-24 year olds and some over-25s. To find out more, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk. For information about apprenticeships in other parts of the UK, see Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Training

You will usually receive on-the-job training when you start work as a horse groom. You can also work towards NVQ/SVQ Levels 1 and 2 in Horse Care and Level 3 in Horse Care and Management.

You can develop your skills by taking British Horse Society (BHS) and Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) qualifications.

BHS qualifications include:

  • BHS Stage 2 Horse Knowledge and Care and Stage 2 Riding
  • BHS Stage 3 Groom's Certificate (Horse Knowledge and Care) and Stage 3 Riding
  • BHS Stage 4 Riding
  • BHS teaching and instructor qualifications.

You can find how how and where you can take these qualifications by visiting the BHS website. See Further Information below for a link to the site.

ABRS qualifications include:

  • ABRS Groom's Certificate
  • ABRS Groom's Diploma.

Visit the ABRS website for more details.

Opportunities

There are about 6,000 horse-related businesses in the UK employing around 54,500 people. More than half are self-employed, and most businesses employ five or fewer employees.

You could be employed in a stud farm, riding and trekking centre, livery yard, racing yard, competition yard and in more specialised businesses such as horse rehabilitation centres. You might also be able to find work with a private owner. Most of the jobs are in England, with the highest numbers in the London region.

When you have experience and further training you could take charge of a yard or become head groom. In a racing yard, you can progress to head lad, travelling head lad and maybe to assistant trainer or trainer. On a stud farm you could become a stud groom, stallion handler or stud manager. If you work in a riding stable you could complete BHS or ABRS teaching qualifications to become a riding instructor.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

An 18 year-old with BHS Stage 3 or a national diploma can earn £10,000 a year.
An experienced person in sole charge of a yard, or a head groom, might earn £15,000 to £16,000.
A head lad may earn more than £20,000 in many racing yards.

As a groom you will be paid according to your experience and responsibilities, but wages vary widely and are generally higher in racing yards. With other employers accommodation, food, free livery for your own horse, riding lessons and the chance to compete could be included as part payment.
