horse riding instructor
Horse riding instructors teach people of all ages and levels of ability and experience to ride. They also train horses.
Instructors develop training programmes suited to individual riders and give practical demonstrations. They observe riders in order to spot and help correct problems and to ensure training is carried out safely.
They may work with:
- non-competitive riders of all ages
- competitive riders, helping individual riders or teams to prepare for competitions such as show jumping, eventing and dressage.
Hours and Environment
Hours are long and irregular and include weekends and evenings. Part-time work may be possible.
Instructors work outdoors, in all weathers, although larger riding schools may have indoor facilities. Some work may be seasonal.
Instructors may travel with riders to competitions, which at the highest levels may be abroad. Freelance instructors travel between riding schools. A driving licence is useful, although not usually essential.
Instructors may have to to live in.
Skills and Interests
Horse riding instructors need to:
- be patient and able to work with riders of all abilities
- enjoy working with people and be able to communicate well with all age groups
- have good horse riding skills
- be able to work without supervision and have the ability to motivate and supervise people
- have first aid skills
- be physically fit
- be calm under pressure
- have business and clerical skills if self-employed.
Entry
Many employers will expect you to hold qualifications from the British Horse Society (BHS) or Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS). The training is progressive and can take several years.
For all BHS exams you must be a member of the society. BHS qualifications are as follows:
- BHS Preliminary Teaching Test
- Assistant Instructor’s Certificate (BHSAI)
- Intermediate Instructor Certificate (BHSII)
- BHS Instructor’s Certificate (BHSI)
- Fellowship of the BHS.
Each BHS qualification usually takes a year to eighteen months to complete.
ABRS examinations are practical and do not involve written papers. You do not need to be a member of the ABRS to sit their exams, which include:
- ABRS Initial Teaching Award
- ABRS Teaching Certificate.
Please contact the BHS and the ABRS or visit their websites for full details of their respective qualifications - see Further Information.
You can prepare for the qualifications in several ways:
- on an Apprenticeship scheme
- by attending a college course
- as a fee-paying student at a riding school (fees tend to be high)
- by gaining the knowledge needed for BHS qualifications through private study and distance learning programmes if you are employed in a related area.
Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk
Apprenticeships may be different in other areas. For further information see Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland
You can do other specific instructor awards through organisations such as the Pony Club and the British Driving Society. To work with people with disabilities, you should hold a Riding for the Disabled Association Instructors' Certificate. See the Further Information section for contact details for these organisations.
You can also do a foundation degree in Equine Sports Coaching at Warwickshire College. Please see Further Information for contact details. Other universities also offer equine-related BTEC HNDs, foundation degrees and degrees.
For information about foundation degrees see Foundation Degree Forward
To search for colleges and universities offering foundation degrees, HNDs and degrees see Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS)
Training
When you are qualified as an instructor there are options for developing your qualifications.
When you are qualified with the BHS, you can apply for an International Trainer’s Passport. You can find out more about this by visiting the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications website - please see the Further Information section. To join the BHS Register of Instructors you must have passed BHS examinations, attended a child protection awareness course and hold a relevant first aid qualification. Please see the BHS website for information.
The ABRS offers:
- the ABRS Advanced Teaching Diploma
- the ABRS Principals Diploma, which you can take if you have been a riding school proprietor or principal for over five years.
You can find out more about these by visiting the ABRS website.
The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) is developing a new UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) for Equestrian Sport and Leisure relevant to all those involved in teaching, training or instructing. This is part of the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC), developed by sportscoachUK in partnership with National Governing Bodies of sport across the UK, and consisting of a five-level framework based on National Occupational Standards.
BEF is the governing body for equestrian sport in the UK and represents the sports of show jumping, eventing, dressage, horse driving trials, endurance riding, vaulting and reining. The BHS (representing recreational riding), the ABRS, and the Pony Club (concerned with young riders) are affiliated to the BEF. Please visit the BEF website for more details. There is a link to the site in the Further Information section of this profile.
Opportunities
Employers include riding schools, competition yards and private stables and agricultural/equine college stables. Trekking centres, riding holiday centres and the Pony Club may offer seasonal work. Instructors may have to do other tasks such as grooming.
Fully qualified instructors may become head or senior instructors at riding schools, or competition judges. There are opportunities to work abroad and the International Equestrian Passport for instructors is officially recognised by 27 countries.
Some experienced instructors become self-employed and may work on a freelance basis for several centres. Some instructors run their own riding schools.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Assistant Instructors are likely to earn up to £12,000 a year.
Experienced instructors are likely to earn up to £18,000.
Senior instructors can earn up to £20,000 a year.
Rates of pay depend upon the size of the centre, qualifications, and whether accommodation, meals and further training are part of the salary. Wages for self-employed instructors depend on experience, success in attracting business and the hours they work.
