Protective clothing may be necessary when working on-site.
Many jobs involve extensive travel and a driving licence is often required.

Entry
There are two ways to start a career as a landscape architect:
- a degree in landscape architecture accredited by the Landscape Institute (LI).
- an accredited postgraduate course if you already have a non-accredited degree in a related subject eg architecture, horticulture, botany.
To get on to a degree you will usually need:
- two A levels/three H grades or their equivalent (subjects such as art, biology, botany and geography are particularly relevant) ; and
- GCSEs/S grades including English and either mathematics or science.
An Access to Higher Education qualification may also be accepted for entry to certain courses.
Colleges and universities will usually take into account any relevant work experience you have, so you should check with them for advice about their requirements.
When you have completed an accredited course you will be eligible for associate membership of LI and can work towards chartered membership. Please see Training for more details.
LI is the professional body for chartered landscape architects. Please see their website for:
- details of accredited courses
- careers information
- LI membership information.
Please see Further Information for a link to the LI website.
Training
Most major employers will expect you to be, or be working towards being, a chartered members of LI (MLI). You will eligible for this after completing mentored experience as part of the LI Pathway to Chartership (P2C). This usually takes around two years and involves:
- being mentored by a fully qualified professional member of the LI
- receiving regular feedback from the Pathway supervisor
- taking an oral examination once you have demonstrated that you are ready to move on.
You can work overseas for up to one year during this time if you are supervised by a professional member of the LI.
As a MLI you will be expected to do at least 20 hours CPD (continual professional development) each year.
Please see the LI website for full information.
Opportunities
Around half of landscape architects work in private practice - companies are often small and may specialise in certain types of landscapes. They also work with:
- local authorities
- large corporations
- the construction industry
- government agencies
- voluntary organisations.
There is a clear career path in local government. In other organisations, it is often necessary to change employer or location to gain management responsibility and to broaden experience. Although landscape architecture is developing, it is still a fairly small profession so there are limited numbers of management opportunities. In private practice landscape designers may progress to become partners or set up their own practice.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Salaries vary according to the company, sector and experience.
Starting salaries can be around £20,000 a year.
Chartered experienced landscape architects can earn from £25,000 to over £40,000.
