pet shop worker

Pet shop workers or assistants are responsible for serving customers. 

Their work includes:

  • selling domestic animals, for example rabbits, kittens and fish, and also pet food, cages, accessories and equipment.
  • providing food and water for the animals
  • cleaning out cages and grooming animals
  • exercising animals where necessary
  • advising customers on pet care and products
  • maintaining stock levels
  • dealing with deliveries. 

Some shops specialise in a particular type of animal, for example aquatic centres which sell mainly fish. Workers here may be expected to provide more in-depth advice and information.

Hours and Environment

Pet shop workers usually work around 39 hours a week, during the day, Monday to Sunday. Part-time hours are often available. 

This job can involve strenuous activity and can be smelly and dirty. Because of contact with animals and cleaning agents, it can be unsuitable for people with certain allergic conditions.

Skills and Interests

To be a pet shop worker you should:

  • have good customer service skills
  • enjoy working with animals and be prepared to learn more about them
  • be aware of health and safety issues and regulations
  • have numeracy skills for handling cash and weighing out pet food 
  • be happy to handle all kinds of animals
  • be prepared to clean out dirty cages and deal with routine tasks.

Entry

You do not need any particular qualifications for working in a pet shop. It can be useful if you have retail or customer service experience and experience of animal care. 

Qualifications such as the following could also give you an advantage when looking for work:

  • BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care – which includes an optional unit in Retail and Customer Service
  • Pet Care Trust Pet Foundation Course (Animal Husbandry) – a flexible format where assessments can be taken online
  • BTEC National Certificate in Fish Management – for work in aquatics centres, has an optional unit in Customer Care.
If you are aged between 16 and 24 you may be able to enter through apprenticeship schemes (please see Training for details).

Training

You will usually be trained on the job in health and safety, customer service and pet cleaning and feeding procedures. 

You may be able to work towards qualifications such as NVQs/SVQs levels 1, 2 and 3 in Animal Care. Levels 2 and 3 have an option in Pet Care and Retail.

Other relevant courses may be available part-time or by distance learning through private training providers. 

If you want to progress to supervisory or management positions it could be useful to do the City and Guilds award (7760) in Pet Store Management. This is essential for some jobs. 

Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Opportunities

There are about 3,500 pet shops and 600 aquatic centres in the UK, employing around 15,000 people. 

In larger stores it can be possible to progress to supervisor and manager positions.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

The starting salary for a pet shop worker is around £10,000 a year.
At supervisor level salaries can be between £12,000 and £14,000 a year.
