riding holiday centre manager
Riding holiday centre managers operate horse-riding schools which offer riding and trekking holidays. They are responsible for the organisation, operation and marketing of the centre and for horse care.
Their duties include:
- planning and overseeing riding activities
- arranging a daily routine of horse care and stable management
- handling queries, problems and complaints
- employing and managing staff, ensuring they are suitably qualified, organising work rotas and arranging training
- carrying out the business and financial activities required to run a commercial organisation
- actively promoting the centre
- keeping up-to-date with riding centre laws
- developing and maintaining good working relationships with other local countryside and tourism operators.
Hours and Environment
As a riding holiday centre manager you are likely to work long hours including evenings and weekends. You will need a flexible attitude to work, particularly during peak times. You will often need to be on-call 24 hours a day.
You will spend some time working indoors carrying out administration and the rest outdoors, in all kinds of weather, caring for the horses and helping out with other activities.
Skills and Interests
To be a horse riding holiday centre manager you should:
- have business and commercial management skills, including an understanding of stable management
- have a sound knowledge of horse breeds and those suitable to recreational riding
- have good customer care skills and an interest in tourism
- have effective leadership and decision-making skills
- have good communication skills
- have the ability to keep calm in difficult situations
- have a good level of physical fitness and stamina
- have knowledge of health and safety requirements.
Entry
To become a riding holiday centre manager, you will need thorough knowledge, experience and training in equestrian work.
You can get in to equestrian work in one of the following ways:
- on-the-job training
- attending a college course
- as a fee paying student at a riding school
- through private study and distance learning whilst in relevant employment.
You are likely to find it an advantage to have qualifications from the British Horse Society (BHS) or the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) or the Pony Club, although these may not always be essential.
You can get full details of BHS, ARBS and Pony Club qualifications by visiting the websites of the respective organisations (please see the Further Information section of this profile for links). You might be able to train as a riding instructor, groom or ride leader and progress into management. Please see the relevant profiles for details of these jobs.
There are also higher education qualifications which you could use in preparation for management. These include foundation degrees, BTEC HNDs and degrees in subjects such as:
- Equine Studies
- Equine Management
- Equine Leisure Management
- Equine Business Management and Rural Recreation
- Tourism Management (Equine).
To get onto these you will need to meet required standards of riding ability as well as academic requirements. You should check with individual colleges and universities for details.
For information about foundation degrees see Foundation Degree Forward
To search for colleges and universities offering foundation degrees, HNDs and degrees see Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS)
Training
If you are working full or part-time in the equestrian tourism industry you can do British Equestrian Tourism (BET) qualifications that have been developed by the BHS, the Trekking and Riding Society of Scotland (TRSS), the Association of Irish Riding Establishments (AIRE) and the Welsh Trekking and Riding Association (WTRA). These are especially suitable if you take out treks, trail rides or hacks.
To gain the BET Riding Holiday Centre Management qualification you must be aged 22 or over and have a BET Ride Leader Certificate or have operated a BHS, TRSS, WTRA or AIRE centre for a minimum of three years. You also need a current First Aid at Work Certificate or appropriate national equivalent certificate. You can take the examinations leading to the qualification at centres throughout the UK. Please see Further Information for a link to the BHS website where you can find details.
You may also be able to do relevant foundation degrees, BTEC HNDs and degrees by part-time study or distance learning.
Opportunities
Equestrian tourism is a developing area with scope for self-employment. British Equestrian Tourism (BET) qualifications are recognised internationally, so there can be prospects of employment overseas.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Starting salaries may be around £12,000.
With experience managers can earn £20,000 or more a year.
Salaries depend on the size of the establishment and whether there are benefits such as accommodation, stabling of your own horse and use of the facilities.
