Art gallery curators manage collections of paintings and objects of artistic, historical and general interest.
Their tasks include:
- researching, identifying and cataloguing paintings and other items
- ensuring paintings and other items are stored in the right conditions
- organising displays
- answering visitors’ questions
- giving talks to local groups or school parties
- finding ways of attracting visitors to the gallery
- negotiating funding and the loan of paintings and other items.
Curators may also be responsible for staffing issues, insurance and security and publicity.
Hours and Environment
As an art gallery curator you will usually work 36 to 37 hours a week on a rota, probably with some weekend work. You may be able to work part-time.
Your working environment will depend on the type of gallery, but you will usually work indoors. You may have to do some lifting and carrying, moving crates and boxes of exhibits or paintings.
Skills and Interests
To be an art gallery curator you need:
- a keen interest in art, and possibly in a specialist area
- good organisational skills
- the ability to run a department or establishment
- a careful approach and attention to detail
- computer skills
- creative flair for devising displays and exhibitions
- a good standard of written English
- strong communication skills for dealing with the public, giving talks and producing information.
Entry
To become an art gallery curator you usually need a degree in a relevant subject such as art or art history.
To search for colleges and universities running degrees see Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You should check with colleges and universities for their entry requirements.
You are also likely to need a postgraduate qualification, which usually takes one year to complete. See the Museums Association website (in Further Information below) for a list of relevant postgraduate courses.

Before you begin looking for a job it is advisable to get some voluntary work experience in a gallery or heritage property. See the UK Art Place website (in Further Information) for a list of galleries around the UK.
Training
As an art gallery curator, you can work towards the following qualifications:
- NVQ/SVQ at Level 3 in Cultural Heritage Operations
- NVQ/SVQ Level 4 in Cultural Heritage
- NVQ/SVQ Level 5 in Cultural Heritage Management.
You can add to your skills and knowledge by attending short courses run, for example, by regional museums councils, private training providers and specialist groups.
The Museums Association has a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme for members.
Opportunities
Art gallery curators work in galleries of all sizes, ranging from large public sector and national institutions such as the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery, to very small independent galleries. Many universities also have galleries, and some large companies employ curators for their art collections.
There is a lot of competion for jobs, There are likely to be more opportunities for promotion in large galleries. You may need to move around the country to gain experience and progression if you work in a small gallery.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only. Pay scales vary for curators depending on whether they work for a large national gallery or a small local one.
New entrants can earn around £16,000 a year.
With experience, earnings can rise to £20,000 or more.
Senior curators can earn between around £27,000 and around £37,000.
High standards of performance can lead to much higher salaries. Private galleries often pay a basic salary with commission on sales. Salaries in London are usually higher than elsewhere.
