artist fine
Artists create original work by a range of methods, such as:
- painting
- drawing
- graphic arts
- printmaking
- sculpture
- photography.
They may work from their own ideas or to an order (known as a commission) from an individual or an organisation.
As well as creating works of art, fine artists also need to promote and sell their work, either through an agent or personally through outlets such as:
- galleries
- exhibitions
- shops
- craft fairs and markets
- festivals.
Because making a living as an artist can be difficult many artists have another job to supplement their income. Some artists are involved in:
- teaching
- running workshops
- working as 'artist in residence' for a fixed period in places such as schools, hospitals or prisons
- community arts.
Hours and Environment
Artists arrange their own working hours. Many have to fit their art work around other full or part-time work.
They may work in a studio or at home, rent space within a group building, or use specialist facilities such as a print or sculpture workshop.
Artists may have to relocate to find work, especially when taking up a residency.
Skills and Interests
To be a fine artist you should:
- be creative
- have a good appreciation of colour and form
- have good communication skills to present ideas, and liaise and negotiate with other professionals
- be self-motivated and enjoy working alone
- be able to accept criticism
- have some business and financial skills in order to promote and market your work
- be able to cope with a fluctuating workload.
Entry
To be successful as an artist you will need skill and talent in your chosen art form. If you are exceptionally talented you may be able to sell your work without formal training or qualifications. However, most fine artists have some training in art or design.
It will be an advantage if you have qualifications which will help you to find paid work, as you are likely to need another job to supplement your income from art work, particularly at the start of your career. You should take this into consideration when planning your training and career development.
There are courses at all levels that will help you to develop your technique and ideas. These include:
- AVCE - check entry requirements with colleges and schools
- BTEC national awards - you will usually need four GCSEs (A-C), or equivalent qualifications
- SQA national certificate awards (Scotland) - check entry requirements with colleges
- BTEC/SQA national diploma - you usually need four GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3), or equivalent
- relevant degree courses - many artists have this level of qualification.
To get onto a degree course in England and Wales you usually need:
- an art and design foundation course; and
- five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) or equivalent qualifications.
Foundation courses usually last one year.
To get on a foundation course you usually need:
- to be at least 17
- have five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3), or equivalent qualifications.
Many applicants also have one or more A levels/H grades, or the equivalent, and you will usually need to show a portfolio of work.
In Scotland, degrees last four years and there is no foundation course. You need five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) and two A levels/three H grades, or equivalent qualifications.
To search for colleges and universities offering art and design foundation courses and degrees see Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS)
Training
As an artist you can develop professionally by doing postgraduate courses, specialist courses in technical or business skills, or by being mentored by a more experienced artist.
Your fine arts training could also help towards moving into other areas such as teaching, advertising, publicity, exhibition work, art therapy or art restoration and conservation.
Opportunities
Many artists combine their work as an artist with paid work in related areas such as art education, community arts, gallery management, critical writing, project management and creative consultancy or in a completely different area.
There is no recognised career path and success depends on the amount of work sold.
Annual Income
There is no set income for this role. Earnings will differ greatly depending on work opportunities and reputation. It is common for fine artists to earn their living from a combination of exhibiting and selling their creative work and part-time or full-time work in other fields.
