cabinet maker
Cabinet makers are skilled craftsmen/women who make individually designed and produced pieces of furniture such as chairs, tables, chests of drawers and storage or display cabinets.
They may also restore antiques or repair damaged furniture.
The work involves:
- obtaining or creating a design drawing of the furniture
- deciding on the quantity and type of materials needed and the method of construction
- buying the material from suppliers such as timber yards
- cutting, shaping and planing the wood, using electric and hand tools
- fixing the parts together
- adding other fixed or movable joints such as brackets and hinges
- fitting handles and/or locks
- polishing the assembled piece of furniture (this may be done by the cabinet maker or by a French polisher).
Cabinet makers who deal directly with customers also discuss designs and negotiate prices.
Hours and Environment
As a cabinet maker your working hours will depend on whether you work in a factory or are self-employed.
In a factory you will usually work a basic 39 hour week, but you are likely to do shift work and overtime. IIf you are self-employed you will arrange your own working hours. You might sometimes need to work long hours and at weekends to meet deadlines
If you are self-employed you are likely to travel regularly to collect wood and other materials from suppliers, and to deliver finished items to clients, so you will usually need a driving licence.
Skills and Interests
To be a cabinet maker you should:
- be good at using hand and machine tools
- be able to understand, draft or adapt designs and technical drawings
- have numeracy skills to calculate quantities, measurements and costs
- have good business and interpersonal skills, particularly if you are self-employed
- be patient and conscientious, able to work accurately and pay attention to detail
- be generally fit and healthy.
Entry
You do not need any specific entry qualifications to be a cabinet maker, although GCSEs (A-E)/S grades (1-5) can be useful, and some employers may expect you to have them.
You can gain relevant skills on a number of courses including:
- NVQ/SVQ Levels 1 in Supporting the Production of Furniture and Furnishings
- City and Guilds Certificate in Furniture Production levels 1-3.
You could also do a higher level course which includes both design and practical skills. This could be particularly useful if you want to become self-employed. Courses include:
- BTEC Higher National Diploma in subjects such as Furniture Design, Furniture Studies or Furniture Design and Making
- SQA HNC in Furniture Construction and Design.
- degrees and foundation degrees in subjects such as Furniture Design

You may be able to get into this job through an apprenticeship scheme. Funding for apprenticeships is available for 16-24 year olds and some over-25s. Training
When you are working as a cabinet maker you may be able to work towards qualifications such as:
- City and Guilds NVQs/SVQs Level 2 in Making and Installing Furniture
- City and Guilds NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Making and Installing Production Furniture
- City and Guilds NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Making and Repairing Hand-crafted Furniture and Furnishings
- City and Guilds Higher Professional Diploma in Creative Arts (4440) - this is suitable for people working in creative businesses, and includes a furniture design option.
Opportunities
As a cabinet maker you could work in the furniture, kitchen or shopfitting industries. With experience you may be able to progress to a supervisory position, or to training other staff.
You could set up your own business, perhaps specialising in a particular type of furniture, restoring antique furniture, or designing and making a range of furniture.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Starting salaries for trainees can be around £10,500.
Experienced cabinet makers can earn from around 11,700 to over £25,000.
Income can be increased by overtime payments and bonuses.
The earnings of self-employed cabinet makers vary a lot, depending on the type of work they do and the amount of work they have.
