ceramic decorator
Ceramic decorators decorate items such as tableware, ornaments and tiles.
They use various methods including:
- applying glazes
- applying lithographs and transfers
- painting by filling in outlines, copying from a similar pattern piece or a detailed drawing freehand
- applying patterns using stencils or pre-cut sponges
- gilding or adding decorative detail, using precious metals such as silver or gold
- adding bands or lines of colour.
Hours and Environment
Ceramic decorators work a 39 hour, five day week, sometimes with overtime. Some companies have a shift system which can involve evening and night work.
Workshops and factories may become hot at times. Good lighting is essential because much of the work is detailed and intricate. With the exception of glazers who often work standing, most decorating is done sitting down.
Skills and Interests
As a ceramic decorator you need to have:
- a steady hand and good eyesight
- good co-ordination
- the ability to work quickly and accurately
- a good sense of colour
- a high level of concentration particularly when the work is repetitive
- strong artistic ability for freehand work.
Entry
You might not need any formal qualifications to get into this kind of work. To be a freehand painter you might need a qualification in art, or be able to show examples of your work.
You can do qualifications including degree and BTEC HND courses in subjects such as:
- ceramics
- ceramics design
- three-dimensional (3-D) design
- surface pattern design.
To get onto these courses you will usually need a portfolio of work and one of the following:
- an art and design foundation course
- BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject and 5 GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3)
- an appropriate AVCE
- equivalent qualifications or experience
To get onto an art and design foundation course you will need:
- 5 GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3); and
- 1 A level/2 H grades.
To get onto BTEC/SQA National Diploma or certificate courses you will need:
- 4 GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3); or
- relevant GNVQ/GSVQ Intermediate; or
- a BTEC/SQA First Diploma or Certificate.
In Scotland you go directly into a four year degree course, which includes a foundation year. You should check with universities for their entry requirements.
To search for colleges and universities offering art and design foundation courses, HNDs and degrees see Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS)
Training
You may be trained on the job, working under the supervision of an experienced ceramic decorator.
You may be able to work towards NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Manufacturing Ceramic Products
Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk
Apprenticeships may be different in other areas. For further information see Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland
Opportunities
Ceramic manufacture in the United Kingdom is concentrated in the West Midlands in the towns around Stoke-on-Trent known as The Potteries. Recently many companies have reduced the number of people they employ.
There are also small craft potteries and studios across the country.
Promotion prospects are limited, although decorators with good inter-personal and organisational skills can become team leaders. Some also become trainers, assessors or verifiers, training others within the company.
Annual Income
The annual income section is intended as a guideline only.
New entrants earn around £10,000.
The top figure may be around £20,000.
