naval architect
Naval architects are professional engineers who are responsible for the design, construction and repair of ships, boats, other marine vessels (such as submarines), and off-shore structures (such as offshore drilling platforms).
Their work can include:
- co-ordinating the work of teams of professionals specialising in a variety of areas of engineering
- ensuring that designs are safe, seaworthy and economic
- consulting with scientists, lawyers, accountants and other business people
- preparing design plans using computer software
- checking specifications using computer and 3D models
- co-ordinating construction or repair work.
Naval architects may specialise in a particular area, such as:
- design
- construction and repair
- research and development
- consultancy.
Hours and Environment
As a naval architect you will usually work 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, but may sometimes need to work extra hours, for example to meet deadlines.
Although design is mainly office-based, you may also do some of your work in laboratories or on the factory floor. You may need to spend time on board ships, boats and rigs, which can involve climbing ladders, walking long distances, and working outside, sometimes in bad weather or rough seas.
Jobs are mainly available in coastal towns and cities. You may need to travel to shipyards and docks, and sometimes spend periods away from home.
Skills and Interests
To be a naval architect you need:
- an understanding of many branches of engineering
- a high level of IT skills, especially in areas such as computer aided design (CAD)
- the ability to work effectively with a wide range of other professionals
- a logical and enquiring mind
- sound judgement
- the ability to communicate clearly in speech and writing
- leadership and management skills
- an analytical and creative approach to problem-solving.
Entry
Most naval architects have a degree or diploma accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) in an appropriate branch of engineering, such as:
- Naval Architecture
- Ocean, Offshore or Marine Engineering
- Ship Science.
See the the RINA website for details of accredited courses - there is a link in Further Information below. With a degree you can become a student member of the RINA and work towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Please check with colleges or universities for entry requirements to degree courses.
If you have a degree in another engineering disciplines or from a course not accredited by the RINA you should check with the RINA whether your qualification entitles you to membership. You may need to do additional training or gain experience to obtain recognition.
You may be able to get onto a degree course with work-based qualifications gained from working as a technician. To become a technician you will usually need four GCSEs (A-C)/ S grades (1-3) or equivalent including English, physics and mathematics. You can get further information and advice from the RNA.
Training
After your degree, you will need to follow an accredited scheme of work-based professional development. A number of companies have accredited training schemes. If your company does not have a scheme, the RINA can help you to develop an individual programme. Your training needs to cover three areas: design, engineering practice and management services.
You will then need to complete a minimum of two years' work experience before applying to be a member of the RINA and hold the title of Chartered or Incorporated Engineer.
As a qualified naval architect you will need to keep your skills and knowledge updated by continuing professional development (CPD). The RINA and other professional institutions organise courses and conferences covering a wide range of topics (such as new technologies, management systems and communication) which are useful for CPD.
Opportunities
Naval architects are employed for design work by the following organisations:
- ship and boat builders
- offshore constructors
- design consultants
- the Ministry of Defence (MOD).
In the UK most building of new ships is done in a very small number of big shipyards, so there are not many openings for naval architects working just on new ships. There are opportunities in the desgn and construction of small craft and yachts, mainly in coastal towns and cities.
Naval architects specialising in constructio and repair are employed by:
- large shipbuilders and repairers
- small firms involved in the construction and repair of small craft;
- companies involved in the maintenance and repair of naval ships and submarines.
Naval architects are also employed by classification societies and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency as ship surveyors. This involves assessing the safety of ships and marine structures.
When you have experience, you may be able to progress to senior positions or become a consultant, providing technical and commercial guidance, support and project management for design, construction, refits or conversions. You could also move into other branches of engineering.
There may be opportunities to work abroad.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Starting salaries for graduates may be around £22,000 a year.
Experienced naval architects may earn from around £35,000 to £50,000 or more a year.
