picture framer

Picture framers make frames to protect and display a variety of items such as:

  • photographs
  • pictures
  • certificates
  • posters
  • tapestries
  • 3 D objects such as medals, butterflies or dried flowers.

Their work involves:

  • discussing requirements with the customer
  • deciding or advising on an appropriate style of frame and the most suitable material, which could be wood, metal or plastic
  • calculating costs and presenting them to the customer for approval
  • cutting glass and materials for the backing, mount and frame to the correct size
  • mounting the object
  • assembling the frame
  • fixing the object in the frame
  • packing, and possibly delivering, the finished product.

Many picture framers undertake framing as a source of extra income and may have additional employment elsewhere. Those with shops may also sell other items such as prints, cards and artists' materials.

Hours and Environment

Hours depend on where the framer works. In a shop or gallery the working week is likely to include Saturday, with a day off during the week. Framers who are employed by an art gallery or specialist manufacturer may work around 37 to 40 hours a week. Self-employed framers work irregular hours, often from home.

Framers use specialist equipment, such as mounting and laminating machines and glass cutting equipment. Workshops tend to be dusty, and protective equipment is sometimes necessary especially if spray painting is involved. Overalls and gloves may be needed to handle valuable artwork.

Skills and Interests

To be a picture framer you should:

  • have some artistic ability and an interest in woodworking and metalworking
  • enjoy undertaking precise work
  • be able to concentrate and have a careful and methodical approach
  • have good manual skills, eyesight and colour vision
  • be numerate for calculating measurements and costs
  • have good customer service skills
  • have good business skills if self-employed.

Entry

There are no standard entry requirements, although employers will expect you to have a good standard of general education.

You can do relevant part-time and short courses at colleges, adult education centres and private centres. Some centres also offer weekend and residential courses.

You can find details of training provided by trainers holding Guild qualifications on the Fine Art Trade Guild website.  Please see the Further Information section of this profile for a link to the website.

Training

You will usually be trained on the job, working alongside a more experienced framer.

The Fine Art Trade Guild is the trade association for the sector. You can achieve their award of Guild Commended Framer by taking tests which are offered at centres throughout the UK. The award is internationally recognised as the qualification for the framing industry.

The Guild also awards advanced qualifications in textiles and mount design and cutting, and produces a range of publications on all aspects of framing. If you join the Guild you will have access to information and support services and be listed in the Guild directory. You can get membership details from the Guild - please see the Further Information section.

Opportunities

Framers may be employed by:

  • specialist frame shops and makers
  • contract framers
  • art galleries
  • museums
  • photographers
  • gift shops.

Picture framing is often taken up as a second career.

Framing businesses are mostly small to medium-sized operations, so prospects for promotion are limited.

Prospects are better if you own your own business or take a franchise. Many self-employed framers have links with local art galleries or photographers.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Full-time trainee picture framers earn around £10,000 a year.
With experience, picture framers can earn around £15,000.
Picture framers working in a specialist area (for example, a museum or art gallery) may earn up to £20,000 a year.

Earnings for self-employed framers vary depending on the success of their business.
