Methods include using digital technology such as microprocessors to produce lettering and cutting out and building up rigid plastic letters or logos into 3D shapes.
Traditional signwriting may involve designing by hand and painting using special brushes and enamel paint. Depending on the project, signmakers may also use screen printing for posters or make glass fibre letters from moulds (for illuminated signs).
The types of material a signmaker will use include vinyl, Perspex, plastic, metal and glass (used for illuminated or electronic signs).
A signmaker’s work may also involve dealing with related paperwork, such as drafting contracts and preparing planning applications.
