watch/clock repairer
Watch and clock repairers, also known as horologists, service, repair and restore clocks and watches. They usually specialise in either watches or clocks, as each involve different skills and techniques.
The work of watch and clock repairers can include:
- inspecting and dismantling watches and clocks to identify faults
- replacing batteries
- cleaning and oiling parts
- removing worn and damaged parts and replacing them from stock or with parts they have made
- fitting new hands and dials
- checking for accuracy of time-keeping
- fitting new watch straps.
Some watch and clock repairers work in jewellery shops or other retail outlets and may serve customers as well as doing repairs. Specialised clock repairers are often involved in repairing and restoring old or antique clocks, and may also make clocks to their own designs.
Hours and Environment
Repairers in the retail sector work around 35-40 hours a week Monday to Friday, or sometimes Saturday. Part-time work is possible in retailing.
Most of the work involves sitting at a bench, and the use of optical aids. A driving licence may be useful if the work involves visiting customers.

- an interest in mechanical gadgets

You could also work towards NVQ levels 2 and 3 in Instrument Servicing, which have units in clock servicing and watch servicing.
You can also attend short BHI seminars in Newark, many of which are residential. The seminars last from 1 to 5 days, and cover both basic and advanced topics. Visit in BHI website in Further Information below for details.
Opportunities
Most watch and clock repair is done by small firms, often employing only one or two staff. There are some larger service workshops, however, which provide a service for jewellery shops or watch houses.
Some jewellery shops have their own repair facilities. If you work in one of these you may also have to serve in the shop. You could have the opportunity to progress to management on the retail side.
You could become self-employed and run your own business or franchises which operate in department stores or shopping centres.
There are also opportunities to work in the museums service, either repairing antiques or providing educational facilities.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
New entrants can earn up to around £15,000 a year.
Experienced watch/clock repairers can earn up to around £30,000 a year.
Earnings for self-employed watch/clock repairers and horologists vary depending on the type and amount of work they have,
