builders merchant

Builders’ merchants or DIY store workers sell building and do-it-yourself products to the building trade and the general public. They sell construction materials including:
  • tiles
  • bricks
  • sand and cement
  • timber and wood products
  • painting and decorating materials
  • electrical and plumbing supplies
  • hand and power tools
  • gardening equipment
  • kitchen and bathroom units.
 Common tasks include:
  • giving product information
  • taking orders and dealing with payments
  • organising deliveries
  • advising on the suitability of materials for a particular job.
They also move goods around the store and yard and load/unload vehicles, manually or with forklift trucks. More senior posts involve staff management and training, planning, purchasing, stock control and health and safety.

Hours and Environment

Builders’ merchants usually open early, with staff normally starting by 8am. Large DIY outlets are open seven days a week and many open for extended hours on weekdays and Sundays. Shift work may be required and part-time work is common.

Merchants work indoors, and outdoors in all weathers, especially those dealing solely with the construction trade. Builders' merchants are on their feet for most of the day and the work can involve lifting or carrying heavy materials.

The employer usually provides staff uniforms and protective footwear.

Skills and Interests

To be a builders’ merchant or DIY store worker, you should:

  • have a good knowledge of building products
  • have good customer care skills
  • have good numeracy skills for taking measurements, making calculations and handling cash
  • have good written skills
  • be punctual, reliable and honest
  • be physically fit
  • have a friendly and helpful personality
  • have a neat and tidy appearance
  • be aware of health and safety issues.

Entry

There are no minimum entry requirements, but it may help to have some GCSEs/S grades particularly in English and maths.

People aged between 16 and 24 may be able to enter the role through an apprenticeship scheme. For more details, see the apprenticeship contacts in the Training section and the two Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) websites in Further Information.

Experience in the construction industry or in retail may be an advantage when applying for work, and an LGV licence and/or forklift truck licence is also useful. See the profile for Forklift Truck Operator.

Training

Training is usually given on the job, supplemented in the larger stores by formal in-house training schemes. There are several relevant NVQs/SVQs at levels 2 and 3 available to employees, supported by the BMF:

  • Distribution, Warehousing and Storage Operations
  • Sales (including Telesales)
  • Customer Service
  • Retail Operations
  • Administration.
The BMF also offers short courses in management, operations, product knowledge, sales and forklift operation. For details, contact the BMF in Further Information.

You may be able to enter through an apprenticeship scheme. Funding for apprenticeships may be available to people in certain priority groups. To find out more, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk. For information about apprenticeships in other parts of the UK, see Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland.

Opportunities

Builders’ merchants and DIY stores are located across the UK. Builders' merchants closely follow trends in the construction industry, which at the moment are good.

The larger DIY stores and builders' merchants, which have increased in number in recent years, are often situated in out-of-town superstores. There has been a decline in the number of smaller merchants, and those that remain tend to specialise in a particular type of product such as timber or painting and decorating.

Larger employers recruit on a regular basis. Part-time vacancies are usually available with both large and small employers.

Working for one of the larger merchants usually offers more secure job prospects, and many of them provide training, or help with training, to enable staff to progress to supervisory and management positions.

Annual Income

The annual income section is intended as a guideline only.

Trainee builders’ merchants earn upwards of £8,500 a year.
Yard staff earn around £12,500 a year.
Delivery drivers earn about £16,000.
Counter sales staff earn in the region of £17,000 a year.

Some employers may pay overtime rates for working shifts and weekends, or reward staff with bonus payments based on sales or profitability.
