paint sprayer

Paint sprayers, sometimes known as finishers or coatings specialists, work in manufacturing or construction.

Production line sprayers follow manufacturer’s instructions when applying finishes to products such as motor vehicles, aircraft frames, white goods (ovens, fridges and dishwashers), yellow goods (construction plant vehicles and machinery), furniture and other consumer items.

Construction site sprayers apply protective coatings and decorative finishes to steel structures such as ships and bridges, building interiors and exteriors, and some carry out abrasive blast cleaning on buildings and structures.

Paint sprayers use a hand spray gun or operate automated machinery to apply the coating, and are responsible for the maintenance of the equipment.

Main duties include:
  • setting up spray equipment
  • making sure materials are mixed to the right specification
  • preparing surfaces
  • applying primers, main coats and finishing coat.
  • checking finished jobs as part of quality control.
Sprayers must follow strict safety procedures, covering the use of potentially hazardous materials, and work cleanly to avoid contaminating the materials and work area.

Some paint sprayers work as car mechanics or in specialised vehicle body repair workshops. For more details see the Motor Vehicle Body Repairer/Builder profile.

Hours and Environment

Production paint sprayers normally work 35 to 40 hours a week. Shiftwork is common in manufacturing and overtime is often available.

In manufacturing, paint sprayers do most of their work in controlled conditions, usually in a specially ventilated section of the factory. Construction site sprayers work mainly outdoors, often from ladders, mobile raised platforms or scaffolding.

Sprayers wear protective clothing, including overalls and face masks.

Skills and Interests

To be a paint sprayer you should:

  • be able to concentrate on tasks and pay close attention to detail
  • have good practical skills
  • follow written instructions and keep records
  • be safety-conscious
  • be able to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
  • have good hand-to-eye coordination
  • have normal colour vision.

Entry

A common route for young people is to train as an apprentice in manufacturing, engineering or motor vehicle finishing. Most apprentices start at 16 to 19, but entry may be possible up to 24 (see Training section for contacts). You will need four GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3), such as maths, English, science, engineering, design and technology or appropriate equivalents.

There are courses open to all age groups, which can be taken at local colleges. These include:
  • BTEC First Diploma in Vehicle Technology (Body and Paint)
  • City & Guilds Certificate/Diploma in Vehicle Body and Paint Operations
  • Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Technical Certificate in Refinishing levels 1 to 3.
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Progression Award in Production Engineering: Finishing.
These may be a suitable entry point in gaining some of the required skills for a production line role. Check with local colleges for details or IMI in Further Information.

For information about the construction sector, contact Construction Skills below.

Training

Most training is on the job under the supervision of experienced sprayers. The exact award you work towards will depend upon the sector you work in. There are some examples outlined below:
  • NVQ/SVQ Performing Manufacturing Operations levels 1 and 2
  • NVQ/SVQ Performing Engineering Operations levels 1 and 2 (these contain units on finishing, including the application of protective coatings).
  • NVQ/SVQ in Vehicle Body and Paint Operations levels 2 and 3 (covering body repair and refinishing)
  • Certificate in Coatings Technology levels 2, 3 and 4
  • NVQ/SVQ Materials Processing and Finishing levels 2and 3
  • NVQ/SVQ levels 1, 2 and 3 in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations (contain options in the use of paint spaying and blast cleaning equipment).
For more details about these awards, contact the professional bodies in Further Information.

Paint spraying equipment and coatings manufacturers often run short courses covering use of their products. Training is normally in the form of a two- or three-day course at a manufacturer’s training centre. Construction Skills provide details of courses and training providers.

The Institute of Metal Finishing (IMF) offers relevant courses at various levels in surface finishings. Completion of certain modules leads to the award of a Technician Certificate. Courses are available by distance learning, with some practical work and tutorials. You can get further information from the IMF below.

Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Apprenticeships may be different in other areas. For further information see Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland

Opportunities

The manufacturing and construction industries are the main employers of paint sprayers. Most opportunities are with large manufacturers and specialist coating firms.

Initial promotion is normally to paint shop supervisor. Paint sprayers with relevant qualifications and experience may be able to work in quality control, health and safety, and production management.

There is some scope for self-employment.

There may be opportunities for construction paint sprayers to work overseas on large projects.
