WoWMyCV(UK) 2011 Careers Advice Pack

quarry worker

Quarry workers, sometimes known as quarry operatives, work in quarries throughout the country. Quarrying is a form of opencast mining which removes the top layer of soil to give access to rock underneath. Quarrying includes a variety of excavating and processing operations to produce products, particularly for the construction industry, including:

  • mixing crushed rock with cement to make concrete
  • producing stone chippings for aggregates used in road construction and repair
  • extracting clay for brick production and slate for roofing.
Modern quarrying is a mechanical process involving large, powerful excavating, transporting and crushing equipment. Quarry workers also use deep drilling machines and explosives to break up rock.

The nature of the work varies enormously and quarry workers may work in any of the following roles:

  • machine operators - working with heavy plant machinery such as excavators, draglines and cranes
  • plant and process operators - employed on crushers, screening plant and stone graders
  • drilling - setting up and operating drilling equipment
  • maintenance workers - fitters, mechanics and electricians working on plant machinery and maintaining vehicles
  • shotfirers – setting and detonating explosives
  • drivers - driving tipper and dumper trucks and other heavy vehicles
  • technicians - working in laboratories on quality control and recording site samples.

Hours and Environment

Quarry workers work a 37.5-hour week, with overtime and shift work very common. Larger companies will employ many workers in office accommodation at or near the quarry.

Sites are located in rural areas so travel will be necessary. The work is physically demanding, dirty, noisy and dusty, and takes place in all weathers; it can also be hazardous but workers wear protective clothing, such as overalls, boots, goggles, ear protectors and safety helmets.

Skills and Interests

As a quarry worker, you should:

  • be physically fit
  • be aware of health and safety issues
  • have an aptitude for mechanical work
  • have the ability to work as part of a team
  • be able to follow instructions
  • have numeracy skills to work out material quantities.

Entry

No formal entry qualifications are required for operative work. If you are aged between 16 and 24, you may be able to train as an apprentice in one aspect of the job, for example maintenance fitting.

Apprenticeships normally require four or five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) including maths and English. For details about apprenticeships, see the contacts in the Training section below.

There are opportunities to enter the industry at any age, particularly if you have some experience of the construction industry, mining or mobile plant operation. For information about plant operation and maintenance, see the profiles for Construction Plant Operator / Mechanic.

Applicants holding a relevant driving licence, for example LGV or plant operator, are likely to be at an advantage for some jobs.

For more information about quarrying as a career, see the Careers in Quarrying website in Further Information.

Training

There are comprehensive training programmes leading to relevant NVQs/SVQs accredited by EMP Awarding Body Limited. Your job role will determine which award you do. Awards include:
  • Drilling Operations (Extractives) Level 2 - includes units on setting up equipment, drilling to specific plans and drill maintenance
  • Processing Operations for the Extractive and Minerals Processing Industries levels 1 to 3 – units on setting up, operating and maintaining processing machinery
  • Plant Operations (Extractives) Level 2 – contains optional pathways in excavating plant operation, lifting and transferring loads, working with rail plant.
There is the NVQ/SVQ Shot Firing Operations at Level 3 for operatives working with explosives.

For those working in sampling and quality control, there is the NVQ/SVQ in Laboratory and Technical Activities at levels 1 to 4.

Health and safety plays a crucial role in this field and there are NVQ/SVQs at levels 3, 4 and 5 in Health, Safety and Environmental Management in the Extractive and Minerals Processing Industries.

EMP Awards has a list of approved training centres, offering the qualifications outlined above together with specialised short training courses. These include:
  • geotechnical training (risk assessment, hazards, rock and soil instability, and safe working procedures)
  • safety passport
  • quarry regulations
  • plant operator competence scheme and plant instructor training.
For information about training and qualifications, see the EMP website below.

Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Apprenticeships may be different in other areas. For further information see Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland

Opportunities

There are well over 2,000 quarries spread throughout the UK. There are also opportunities to work abroad, especially in developing countries.

Opportunities exist to progress from quarry worker to operative, driver, mechanic or fitter. Alternatively, it is possible to train as a driller or a shotfirer by undergoing specialist training in the use of drilling equipment and explosives.

Suitable experience will lead to supervisory and health and safety positions in the quarry, while further educational qualifications can lead to jobs such as laboratory and quality control technician, and quarry engineer.

Annual Income

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Trainee operatives start at around £12,000 a year.
With experience this can rise to around £17,000 a year.
Senior quarry workers can earn up to £23,500 a year.

Rates may increase with overtime, shift pay and bonuses.
