quarry worker
- mixing crushed rock with cement to make concrete
- producing stone chippings for aggregates used in road construction and repair
- extracting clay for brick production and slate for roofing.
The nature of the work varies enormously and quarry workers may work in any of the following roles:
- machine operators - working with heavy plant machinery such as excavators, draglines and cranes
- plant and process operators - employed on crushers, screening plant and stone graders
- drilling - setting up and operating drilling equipment
- maintenance workers - fitters, mechanics and electricians working on plant machinery and maintaining vehicles
- shotfirers – setting and detonating explosives
- drivers - driving tipper and dumper trucks and other heavy vehicles
- technicians - working in laboratories on quality control and recording site samples.
Hours and Environment
Quarry workers work a 37.5-hour week, with overtime and shift work very common. Larger companies will employ many workers in office accommodation at or near the quarry.
Sites are located in rural areas so travel will be necessary. The work is physically demanding, dirty, noisy and dusty, and takes place in all weathers; it can also be hazardous but workers wear protective clothing, such as overalls, boots, goggles, ear protectors and safety helmets.
Skills and Interests
As a quarry worker, you should:
- be physically fit
- be aware of health and safety issues
- have an aptitude for mechanical work
- have the ability to work as part of a team
- be able to follow instructions
- have numeracy skills to work out material quantities.
Entry
Training
- Drilling Operations (Extractives) Level 2 - includes units on setting up equipment, drilling to specific plans and drill maintenance
- Processing Operations for the Extractive and Minerals Processing Industries levels 1 to 3 – units on setting up, operating and maintaining processing machinery
- Plant Operations (Extractives) Level 2 – contains optional pathways in excavating plant operation, lifting and transferring loads, working with rail plant.
- geotechnical training (risk assessment, hazards, rock and soil instability, and safe working procedures)
- safety passport
- quarry regulations
- plant operator competence scheme and plant instructor training.
Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Opportunities
There are well over 2,000 quarries spread throughout the UK. There are also opportunities to work abroad, especially in developing countries.
Opportunities exist to progress from quarry worker to operative, driver, mechanic or fitter. Alternatively, it is possible to train as a driller or a shotfirer by undergoing specialist training in the use of drilling equipment and explosives.
Suitable experience will lead to supervisory and health and safety positions in the quarry, while further educational qualifications can lead to jobs such as laboratory and quality control technician, and quarry engineer.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Trainee operatives start at around £12,000 a year.
With experience this can rise to around £17,000 a year.
Senior quarry workers can earn up to £23,500 a year.
Rates may increase with overtime, shift pay and bonuses.
