WoWMyCV(UK) 2011 Careers Advice Pack

timber yard operative

Timber yard operatives work for timber merchants, sawmills and larger DIY stores. Duties vary depending on the employer but are likely to include some of the following tasks:
  • loading, unloading, moving and stacking timber, either manually or with a forklift truck
  • sorting and labelling timber into sizes and wood types
  • transferring timber to the sawmill or workshop
  • treating timber
  • updating paper and computer records
  • making deliveries.
In some yards operatives advise customers about products and process orders.

While most of the timber cutting is done by trained and qualified wood machinists in the sawmill, timber yard operatives may occasionally use basic cutting and sawing tools to cut timber to size. See the profile for Wood Machinist.

Hours and Environment

Timber yard operatives normally work a 40-hour week, Monday-Friday, with some Saturday mornings and occasional overtime.
They work outside in all weathers. Mill and warehouse work can be noisy and dusty. Operatives wear protective clothing.

Skills and Interests

To be a timber yard operative you should:

  • be physically fit
  • have good customer care skills
  • be able to calculate quantities and take accurate measurements
  • have good practical skills
  • be able to work as part of a team
  • be aware of health and safety regulations.

Entry

There are no set entry requirements, but some employers may look for GCSEs/S grades in subjects such as maths, English, and design and technology, or equivalent vocational qualifications such as Edexcel Introductory Certificate/Diploma in Construction. Apprenticeships may be available for people aged between 16 to 24. For further details see the apprenticeship contacts in the Training section.

A normal driving licence or LGV for wagons, will be required for making deliveries to customers. Depending on duties, a forklift licence may also be needed. See the profile for Forklift Truck Operator.

The Timber Trade Federation and partners have created The Doorway website, which offers details about careers, training, qualifications and vacancies in the timber trade. See contact details in Further Information.

Training

Training is mainly on the job. New entrants follow an induction based on company policies and procedures. Operatives may also receive forklift training.

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) advises on several different qualifications available in this sector. NVQ levels 2 and 3 are available in Distribution, Warehouse and Storage Operations. The BMF also offers short courses in management, operations, product knowledge and sales.
