timber yard operative
- loading, unloading, moving and stacking timber, either manually or with a forklift truck
- sorting and labelling timber into sizes and wood types
- transferring timber to the sawmill or workshop
- treating timber
- updating paper and computer records
- making deliveries.
Hours and Environment
Skills and Interests
To be a timber yard operative you should:
- be physically fit
- have good customer care skills
- be able to calculate quantities and take accurate measurements
- have good practical skills
- be able to work as part of a team
- be aware of health and safety regulations.
Entry
There are no set entry requirements, but some employers may look for GCSEs/S grades in subjects such as maths, English, and design and technology, or equivalent vocational qualifications such as Edexcel Introductory Certificate/Diploma in Construction. Apprenticeships may be available for people aged between 16 to 24. For further details see the apprenticeship contacts in the Training section.
A normal driving licence or LGV for wagons, will be required for making deliveries to customers. Depending on duties, a forklift licence may also be needed. See the profile for Forklift Truck Operator.

- Timber Treatment
- Saw Timber to Specific Dimensions
- Sort, Build and Package Sawn Timber and Timber Products.
Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Opportunities
Timber yard operatives may move into supervisory work in the yard, mill or shop. Opportunities also exist in management, training and assessing, sales and marketing and timber importing.
There are limited opportunities for self-employment or for work exporting timber from abroad.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Salaries are between £8,500 and £12,500 a year.
Operatives with duties such as machining or supervisory responsibilities may earn up to £16,000.
