Skills and Interests
To be a wood machinist you should:
- have good practical skills and some mechanical knowledge
- have a good understanding of the characteristics of different types of timber
- be able to follow instructions and production schedules
- be able to concentrate for long periods and pay attention to detail
- be safety conscious
- be able to work effectively on your own and in a team
- have good numeracy skills for calculations and measurements.
Entry
There are no set entry requirements, but employers tend to want people with some on-site experience. If you have not worked in construction before, then you may want to consider working as a labourer to gain site experience. Once working, the employer may be willing to offer you training (see Training section below).
You can take college courses in this field, which can teach you some of the skills needed for the job but employers may still want to see some experience. Courses include:
- City & Guilds Certificates Basic Skills in Construction: Carpentry and Joinery (6214), Woodworking (6215)
- Edexcel Introductory Certificate/Diploma in Construction
- Intermediate Construction Award in Wood Machining.

Training
Most training will involve work-based learning combined with assessment. There are several qualifications available including NVQs/SVQs at levels 2 and 3 in Wood Machining. Units include:
- Produce Sawn, Planed and Profiled Products
- Produce Shaped, Turned, Jointed, Sanded and Bored Products
- Produce Products Using CNC/NC machinery
- Maintain Machinery and Equipment.

By 2010, workers within the construction sector must hold a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or be registered with an affiliated scheme. Many construction firms and their clients already insist that operatives hold a relevant CSCS card to work on site. To receive a card, a worker must hold an NVQ/SVQ or acceptable equivalent and pass a health and safety assessment.
Apprenticeships may be available for those under the age of 24. In England these are currently Apprenticeships (level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3). To find out more about these, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Opportunities
Jobs are available in many areas of the country including timber yards, saw mills, construction and furniture companies. It may be possible to move into related areas such as bench joinery or shopfitting. With experience, promotion to supervisory and management levels is also an option.
Annual Income
Figures are intended as a guideline only.
Salaries for new starters range from £11,500 to £15,000.
With qualifications and experience, this can rise to between £18,500 and £21,000.
