Mears to create 800 jobs and seeks deals
The company, which also said it is negotiating £900m worth of new contracts, is planning to increase its 8,000 strong workforce by at least 10pc in 2009 to meet new contract commitments. Bob Holt, chief executive, said: "Assuming that we're looking at turnover and revenue growth in excess of 15pc, I would anticipate employee numbers rising by a minimum of 10pc."
Mr Holt said the group is already in talks with potential acquisition targets and expects to complete deals this year. Mears negotiated an increased banking facility of £40m with Barclays last April and is searching for bolt-on acquisitions. "We're always looking and talking to people. We would anticipate they'll be some acquisitions during the next year," he added. Finance director Andrew Smith expects to increase Mears' £1.6bn order book and is confident it will replicate the 15pc growth seen in 2008. "The pipeline would indicate that [the order book] will continue to increase. It would be nice to continue to grow it at the rate we have. There's £900m of works that are currently being tendered for and we have a win rate of around one in two," he said.
