Snooker clubs group Rileys has gone into administration with the loss of 200 jobs and closure of 30 sites, due to a downturn in trade and large debts.
However, the administrators said the future of the other 129 clubs and 1,200 staff had been secured after the sale of the firm's remaining assets. These have been bought by a new company called Valiant Sports, which includes some of Rileys' existing directors. Read Full Story Here

The Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) is to cut 1,000 jobs as the advertising slump continues to hurt newspapers.
The job cuts at its regional arm Northcliffe Media are more than double what it estimated last November, the media company said. Northcliffe Media publishes 113 papers in the Midlands and south of England, selling 4.1 million copies a week. It said it had a "difficult quarter" so far and expects a "substantial fall" in profits in the first half of 2009. Media buying and research group Aegis is to cut 5% of its global workforce – around 780 employees – as part of a £40m cost-saving plan to weather the downturn, as the group reported a 25.7% increase in underlying pre-tax profits in 2008. Aegis said 70 of the cuts would come from its UK operation.
63 jobs are to go in Omagh after timber firm Woodlock Joinery ceased trading. The company manufactured window frames, doors, conservatories and staircases, but had been experiencing "difficult trading conditions" in recent months.

Hoover is ending 60 years of manufacture in south Wales with the loss of more than 300 jobs. The Merthyr Tydfil factory, which employs around 450 people making washing machines and tumble dryers, will close tomorrow following a 90-day consultation period. A statement said: "There was no escaping the conclusion that our Merthyr Tydfil manufacturing facility could not produce competitively priced laundry products".

A total of 400 redundancies have been made at Wrekin Construction Group after it went into administration. Administrators Ernst & Young said the redundancies at bases across Shropshire, Yorkshire, Northamptonshire and Cheshire were announced on Tuesday. A skeletal staff of 70 has been kept on at the Shropshire headquarters to help administers "wind down the business", a spokesman for the accountants said. Wrekin said it had millions of pounds of orders but had cash flow problems. It was announced on Tuesday that the firm had gone into administration. The firm blamed Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) for its predicament because the bank would not extend credit to cover cash-flow problems. However, RBS said Wrekin was unsustainable due to "creditor pressure". Wrekin also has subsidiaries in Staffords9hire and Scotland.
Technology firm NCR is to end manufacturing work in Dundee with the loss of about 252 jobs. The ATM manufacturer blamed "unprecedented contraction in the global economy" for the cuts. Engineering, manufacturing, marketing and support staff will be affected by the reductions in the workforce.

Renishaw, the precision engineering group, announced plans to make more than a fifth of its workforce, 500 staff, redundant just weeks after persuading staff to take a 20pc pay cut.
Birmingham fixtures firm Savekers was forced into administration with the loss of 34 jobs.
Tesco closed its Fastway distribution depot at Daventry, Northamptonshire, with the loss of 150 posts.

MEN Media, the publisher of Guardian Media Group's Manchester Evening News and 22 weeklies, told staff 150 jobs will go and all weekly editorial offices will be closed.

The National Trust for Scotland will cut more than 90 jobs, about a fifth of its workforce, because of the economic slowdown.
East Midlands Trains said it was cutting 162 jobs, hitting management, clerical and supervisory roles.
Princess Yachts, the luxury boat firm, said it was cutting up to 450 jobs in Plymouth because of the current economic climate.

ITV has announced it is cutting 600 jobs across its business, and plans to make other "significant" savings. The announcement came as ITV reported a loss of £2.7bn for 2008 after a huge write-down in the value of its assets.
More than 560 jobs will go in south Wales after an aluminium factory and a car parts manufacturer said they had been hit by the economic downturn. Novelis said its aluminium sheet mill in Rogerstone, Newport, will close by the end of April with 440 job losses.
IMI, an engineering group which makes drinks dispensers and air conditioning units, said it has cut 250 jobs in the UK since December.
Royal Bank of Scotland said it was cutting 90 jobs at its offshore centres, which include Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar.
Accountancy and consulting group KPMG said it would make 20 people redundant in its Belfast operation.

More than 300 jobs are set to go with the closure of the Indesit washing machine factory in Denbighshire. In a statement, the company blamed the "continuing decline" in the market for the plan to close the factory at Kinmel Park in Bodelwyddan. It said closing the plant was the only "feasible" option for the company to remain competitive in the UK.
Meggitt, the Bournemouth-based engineering and aerospace group, said it planned to axe up to 750 jobs in as part of a programme to cut by about £50m a year.

Engineering group Senior said it will cut 500 jobs in the first four months of 2009, taking total redundancies since the start of the final quarter of 2008 to 1,000.

The recession reached the refined environs of 181 Piccadilly yesterday when Fortnum & Mason said that it was cutting jobs. The upmarket London retailer said that it was consulting staff but would not comment on how many redundancies could be involved. However, it is thought that about 55 staff, or 10 per cent of the workforce, will be made redundant.

Homeware and gift retailer The Pier went into administration on December 4. The chain has 31 stores and 17 concessions across the UK and employs around 400 people.

GlaxoSmithKline, the UK's largest pharmaceutical company, said it would be cutting 200 jobs at its North East manufacturing site. The redundancies at Barnard Castle, County Durham, which employs about 1,000 staff, will be made over the next 12 to 18 months.
Experian, the company that runs credit checks, revealed its intended to cut 300 jobs from its operations in Britain and Ireland.
About 200 people lost their jobs after JA Magson, the toy and stationary distributor, collapsed into administration.
Pinnacle Entertainment also went into administration with the loss of 94 jobs .

Avis Europe said it would axe 315 jobs, mostly in the UK, as it warned full-year profits would not match the previous year.

Babcock Marine announced plans to cut 300 posts at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth's largest business employer, to cut costs.
Corus, the steelmaker, will be cutting 400 posts from its distribution business. The redundancies will be spread across Britain, with 100 in the West Midlands, almost 100 in Shotton, north Wales, 50 in south Wales, 50 in Leeds and the rest in other parts of the country.

Credit Suisse said it was cutting 500 jobs as it struggled to cope with losses on investments and a fall in investment banking business.

Goldman Sachs announced plans to cut 10pc of its worldwide workforce as a result of the continued downturn in a number of its core banking markets. Reports said 600 jobs could go in London, where Goldman employs 6,000 people.
Rightmove, Britain's biggest property search website, said it was cutting 20pc of its 300-strong workforce after admitting that the housing market will not recover next year.

Cadbury said it would make about 600 employees redundant as part of a restructuring that will lead to the departure of two of its four regional business heads globally.

Swiss bank UBS confirmed plans to cut 2,000 jobs from its investment banking unit and "reposition" the division to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
